Riassunto: A perfect introduction to art for children everywhere, The Art Book, Children’s Edition brings the clarity and innovation of Phaidon’s best-selling The Art Book to our youngest readers ever. An A to Z guide of 30 great artists – each featured on a double-page spread – and their most famous works designed for both parent and child to enjoy together. The book encourages the children to look closely at the featured works and use their imagination to understand why artists choose to create the pieces they do and in the ways that they do.
From Leonardo’s Renaissance masterpiece Mona Lisa to Andy Warhol’s iconic Marilyn, from Jeff Koons’ exuberant, flower-encrusted Puppy to Botticelli’s beautiful, flower-strewn Primavera, 30 works have been selected from The Art Book especially for this edition, chosen for their vital importance in art history as well as their appeal to children.
The giants of art history – Van Gogh, Matisse, Rembrandt, Turner and Velázquez – are all here, but this edition also offers its readers an introduction to challenging, recent artists including Cindy Sherman and Donald Judd. The Art Book, Children’s Edition makes this broad, exciting selection of 30 key works across the history of art clear and accessible to children from age seven and upwards, but will be of interest to readers of all ages.
From Booklist: Believe it or not--there is a gorgeous art book on the market that is a bargain. Thirty-five dollars brings your library a massive 97/8 by 113/8 inches 8 pound tome containing 500 full-page colorplates of typical works of 500 painters and sculptors from medieval to modern times. A line of small type at the bottom of each page provides the artist's name, place and date of birth and death, and documentation on the pictured work: title, date, media, dimensions (in inches and centimeters), and location. In a bar across the top of each page is a discussion of 150-175 words as one would hear from a docent in a gallery. Themes, symbolism, and movements are explained, and the artist is placed in the history of art. These succeed in making art history accessible to neophytes, but there is no tone of condescension. Terms are always defined, and a small icon of a pointing hand refers to contemporaries and artists with similar styles. For example, the Hokusai text explains that he belonged to the "Ukiyo-e (or floating world) school, which concentrated on ordinary things of everyday life . . . " and that he greatly influenced European artists, particularly Edouard Manet and his circle." The entry on Alberto Burri explains his use of ugly material in Sacco, and the one on Pieter Claesz explains the theme and symbolism of items in his pictured still life.
The colorplates are supplemented by two spare glossaries of artistic movements (32 of them) and technical terms (18). These helpful features explain terms used in the text; for example, Dada "with its cult of the irrational, was important in preparing the ground for the advent of Surrealism in the 1920s." Nothing is taken for granted--the definition of illumination reads "the manuscripts made from parchment or vellum (treated animal skin)." The final appendix is a directory of museums and galleries that own the works, organized by country.
In a strict evaluation as a reference work one could fault the lack of criteria for selection. There is no list of artists included except on the dust jacket flaps. But this feast for the eyes with its accessible text can be recommended for most libraries. The striking dust-jacket will attract young people, and the illustrations should interest them. Adults can consult it to place an artist chronologically and to get an idea of his or her style.
