Descrizione libro Huia, Wellington, 2005. Card Covers. Condizione: NF. No Jacket. Norman Heke (illustratore). 1st. Sub-titled "The Eternal Thread -- Te Aho Mutunga Kore" this impressive publication embraces the art of Maori weaving and plaiting, which is described as "being a precious gift from our ancestors, that is maintained, nourished and enriched by Maori weavers today." and that ".our beautiful creations of art and culture are still fashioned today from nature's offerings." The book covers the two divisions of The Eternal Thread --- Whatu, Maori Weaving and Raranga, Maori Plaiting. Text material covers its history, origins, patterns/designs, evolution, materials used and working methods. The project to produce the book was initiated by the National Maori Weavers Collective (Te Ropu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa) with ancient legends gathered into the background for the modern day weaving and plaiting. The exquisite work of 35 leading wavers/plaiters is displayed throughout the book through the medium of Norman Heke's equally beautiful colour photographs. About 70 examples are featured in close-up on full page plates, with the complete article illustrated in a smaller photo on the facing page which also carries a description of the subject. An invaluable acknowlegement of the skills, dedication and application of those who keep this ancient art flourishing. First edition of 2005 from Huia Publishers with assistance from Toi Maori Aotearoa and Te Waka Toi, 176 pages including glossary and further reading list, illustrated throughout with colour photographs. Colour pictorial card covers with flaps front and back are NF, text block also NF, no inscriptions. 27.5cm By 21cm. Codice articolo 004874

Descrizione libro University of Washington Press, 2005. Soft cover. Condizione: As New. Card Cover, excellent clean copy, illustrated with colour photographs, previous owners name in pen on first title page and also last page. The Art of Maori Weaving: the Eternal Thread/Te Aho Mutunga Kore. The art of Maori weaving and plaiting is a precious gift from our ancestors that is maintained, nourished and enriched by Maori weavers today. Contemporary Maori weavers have a wealth of art to show the world. Their art derives from processes that evolve from a seed, the sowing of that seed, and nurturing its growth to maturation for harvesting. In the harvesting, our ancestors taught us well to maintain nature's bounty through conservation and sustainable use. Through these practices, our beautiful creations of art and culture are still fashioned today from nature's offerings. The Eternal Thread showcases contemporary art works by some of Aotearoa's Maori expert weavers. It celebrates innovartion and the development of weaving and plaiting as art forms in modern times. It also acknowledges the continuity of the technology associated with Maori weaving and plaiting brought to Aotearoa by Maori ancestors many centuries ago. The art shown in this book is organised by two distinct categories: whatu, a form of finger weaving using warps and wefts; and raranga, the interlacing of left and right hand strands. The technology brought to Aotearoa included whatu, using single-pair twining of wefts across warps for weaving items of clothing as well as fish traps and nets; raranga, for plaiting mats, sails and baskets through the manipulation and interlacing of left- and right-hand strands; whiri, for braiding strands of fibre together for rope and cord; and the process for making tapa, a cloth made from beaten bark. Weight 0.8 g Size 275mm by 214mm. Codice articolo 000310
