In this, the first English translation of these classics, the translators have made available to English~speaking readers one of the most significant of all colonial accounts. Duran's stated purpose was to help the missionaries combat the religious beliefs of the Indians. But despite himself, he became deeply absorbed in their rich culture. To assure the accuracy of his account, he searched out Indian survivors of Pre~Conquest times and Spaniards who had accompanied Cortes to Mexico. He recorded descriptions of the gods and goddesses, the rituals attending their worship, the festivals and ceremonies, the ingenious calendrical system, and their occupations, games, and social life. The translators based their work on the original manuscript, now in the National Library of Madrid. Accompanying the text are reproductions of the excellent illustrations from Ramirez' nineteenth~century copy of the manuscript. The drawings vividly portray the Aztec pantheon, the temples and public buildings, and the rites and dress of the people. "The best look we possibly can have into the life~style and life~way of a most complex society."~San Francisco Examiner~Chronicle. / "What is remarkable about Duran's works is the painstaking research based on the use of native informants, pre~Hispanic manuscripts and paintings." ~Library Journal.
