Cheshire 1630-166o is a significant addition to the growing number of studies dealing with the impact of the civil wars and Interregnum on provincial society and institutions. But it goes beyond previous studies in several important respects; in particular it attempts to get below the surface of county life to examine the effects of the wars at a village and parochial level. Dr. Morrill shows that the impact was at once more economically damaging and more politically ennervating than is usually allowed. Furthermore, he pays far closer attention to the 165os than other studies have done, and he reaches important conclusions about the failure of the Protectorate. These chapters also provide an illuminating study of the work of the Major Generals and a fresh interpretation of the Booth Rebellion of 1659. Dr. Morrill also gives a highly original account of the work of the Commissions of the Peace 1646-6o. In general he emphasizes throughout the overriding importance of social issues and power groupings, but an attempt is made to relate his work to recent research on national politics. Size: 8vo.
