Riassunto: The Idealist's Journey is City Year's innovative leadership development model, designed to guide our participants (known as corps members) through the inner work of leadership development that occurs over the course of a challenging year of service. Inspired by Joseph Campbell's hero's journey framework, the curriculum views a year of service as a journey of personal transformation. It represents a collection of best practices distilled from our 20 years of developing idealistic leaders through a long-term, full time service experience.
The Idealist's Journey includes:
-A collection of tools and concepts focused on leadership development
-A carefully designed sequence of guided personal reflection questions
-A collection of brief essays designed to help idealists understand the individual, team, and community development that occurs over the course of the Journey
Although The Idealist's Journey was created for City Year's young adult corps members (ages 17-24), it presents concepts, insights, and reflection questions that are both ageless and timeless. The Journey is sure to be a valuable resource for:
-Individuals of any age engaged in a long-term service experience
-Engaged citizens who have made a consistent, ongoing commitment to volunteering
-Idealists engaged in public service careers (teachers, nurses, non-profit professionals, etc)
-Retired adults embarking on a new life-stage focused on volunteering and service
For all of these audiences, The Idealist's Journey will provide useful tools, concepts, and reflection questions carefully designed to guide idealists through the inner work of leadership development that occurs when he or she makes a sustained commitment to service and volunteering.
City Year is an education-focused non-profit that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these diverse young leaders make a difference in the lives of children, and transform schools and neighborhoods in 25 U.S. locations, as well as in London and Birmingham in the UK, and in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Just as important, during their year of service corps members develop civic leadership skills they can use throughout a lifetime of community service.
Together we are building a citizen service movement that is larger than our organization, our lifetime, and ourselves.
