Riassunto: Drawing on observations and experiences of living along one of the great lakes in every season for nearly 25 years, Gretchen Paprocki provides an eye-opening introduction and portrait of a multifaceted coastal landscape. The setting is within the world's largest system of freshwater dunes. By way of extended, deep, and studied engagement, Gretchen invites a full immersion into an always changing and extraordinary arena of lakeshore, forested dunes, and swamp and marsh lands. In prose that is personal, entertaining, and enlightening, along with beautifully illustrative images, Gretchen offers a unique survey that will surprise and delight anyone interested in the natural world and especially any Lake Michigan visitor. Her story speaks of connections, relationships, and understandings that have a universal relevancy.

L'autore: Educator, naturalist, writer, Gretchen Paprocki was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in urban settings, but came to spend much of her adulthood with her husband in the more natural settings of rural Indiana, the mountains of western North Carolina, and along the western Michigan coastal area. In addition to owning property in these locations, she and her family visited and/or camped in numerous natural areas across the continent. Engaging and enjoying the ecological richness of those varied environments, she became a naturalist-conservation by avocation. An elementary school teacher by vocation for 27 years, Gretchen integrated ecological concepts into classroom curriculums, initiated the establishment of an outdoor learning center, and was chosen as Indiana Elementary Geography Teacher of the Year, 1993-94. She and her husband and fellow conservationist have 2 sons and 2 grandchildren. In 2009, Gretchen died of cancer at age 65 in Lafayette, Indiana.
