Riassunto: The Unity Candle has found its way into the Christian Wedding Ceremony over the past thirty to forty years. It is used by many Christian Traditions but why it is used is often times dependent upon what the couple may have read on how it is to be used or perhaps what they have experienced at weddings they have attended as well as the opinion of the official who certifies the marriage. It is often time used to show that couples who were single have now become one or that the families of the bride and groom are now joined. But is there a potentially deeper meaning for its use? This book looks at the Unity Candle, its origins, and its place in the wedding ceremony and examines the potential deeper meaning for the use of the Unity Candle. The origin of the Unity Candle is vague at best but has begun to develop a fledgling tradition, not unlike the marriage ceremony itself. The origins of the ceremony developed from families joining together, to the introduction of the marriage contract, to the Christianization of the contract into a marriage covenant. The wedding ring likewise became a part of the ceremony. At one point in time it was to show ownership but has evolved to become a sign of unity. Both have come to symbolize a deeper understanding from a Christian point of view. The Unity Candle is the new introduction to the ceremony, and what it symbolizes is, as noted above, not clear. By looking at the evolving Christian Marriage Ceremony in the West and what a symbol points to, along with an understanding of love, from a Christian perspective, the author provides a basis for the liturgical use of the Unity Candle in a Christian Wedding Ceremony.
