One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, the Battle of Stones River (aka Murfreesboro) was almost fought to a draw, but the hubris of General Braxton Bragg, CSA, forced one last rebel attack, and the confederates were routed by a superior Union Army on January 2, 1863, after three days of brutal fighting.
All of the Kentucky Confederate regiments were known as "Orphans," as both the USA and the CSA had a star on its respective flag claiming the allegiance of the state. In this battle, the "Orphan Brigade" of Kentucky volunteers was led by Major General John C. Breckenridge, CSA, former vice president of the USA.
James Time, an itinerant northern seaman turned soldier, finds himself leading a platoon of orphans, youngsters in every respect, in the 6th Kentucky Regiment of the Rebel Army. Follow Sergeant Time as he leads his young and inexperienced soldiers into battle against a larger and better equipped Union Army. After the fight, Time risks his own life and freedom to rescue a slave and a pregnant teen in a mad dash north, testing his own resolve and courage.
The March of the Orphans And the Battle of Stones River will enlighten and entertain you about a remarkable footnote in our nation's history.
From the Author:
The true historical movements of the 6th Regiment of Breckinridge's "Orphan Brigade" match the dates and times I have depicted in the book. I realized while I was developing The March of the Orphans that I would never be able to give an in depth account of the entire set piece battle. I have tried to write a respectful and historically accurate treatment of a fictitious unit of Rebel orphans within the true larger regiment and brigade. I chose small unit interactions and character development to speak of the people that made the history of this battle so unique. This is a novel with a historical basis in fact, and I do not pretend to be an expert.
My wife and I visited the Stones River National Battlefield outside of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, during a combined work and book signing trip to Nashville in November, 2013.
The grounds are beautiful, peaceful, and astonishing in well-preserved detail. The gravestones, thousands of them in remembrance of soldiers from all over our nation, circa 1863, are sobering.
What is equally impressive is the Visitor Center. The displays describe a battle where the field strength was over 41,000 Union soldiers and 35,000 CSA, and total casualties were almost 30% on both sides. These are staggering numbers, and while they make Stones River one of the bloodiest fights of the Civil War, except for regional devotees this fight is largely unknown. It is from the walk-through and reading of the displays that we discovered the catalyst for this novel: The Orphan Brigade.
The authority at the Stones River National Battlefield is Ranger Jim Lewis, who directed me to two chief research works that would provide the foundation I now craved to begin the project.
Blue & Gray Magazine, Volume XXVIII, Issue 6, contains Ranger Lewis' lengthy article "A Hard Earned Victory for Lincoln," which provided a concise history complete with no less than eighteen copyrighted maps depicting the field of battle and specific movement and placement of units. Ranger Lewis' article is wonderful and should be read first by anyone who seeks to know the hard facts, military tactics, and personalities that affected the battle. The rough map at the beginning of my novel is a tease.
Eyewitnesses at the Battle of Stones River, compiled and edited by David R. Logsdon, ©2002, 1989, is also a magnificent work. Mr. Logsdon put the actual letters and diary entries of both northern and southern soldiers in chronological order, and each page builds on the previous one. It is both fascinating and harrowing. Many of the writers of these letters did not survive the battle itself, let alone the war.
The magazine and book above are real works of love and history, and I am in Ranger Lewis' debt for the referral.
I hope The March of the Orphans inspires you to visit and take advantage of the wealth of history the Stones River National Battlefield possesses.
