Riassunto: This is a gloriously illustrated and fascinating history of Mauritius - heart of the 'Spice Route' for over 200 years. This is the engrossing story of Mauritius, the exotic Indian Ocean island port of call at the heart of the fabled 'Spice Route'. Although first discovered and visited by the Arabs and the Portuguese, and subsequently colonised by the Dutch, the French and the English, it is the French influence that is most keenly felt in Mauritius today, thanks to France's nearly century-long rule over Mauritius from 1715 to 1810. Combining rich historical detail, rare archival documents, antique lithographs paintings, and portraits, and fascinating stories of well-known figures of the period - like the founder of the colony Governor Mahe de La Bourdonnais, the explorer and botanist Pierre Poivre, and the celebrated explorer Jean-Francois de Laperouse - "Mauritius on the Spice Route" is an invitation to step back in time and discover the fascinating history of this exotic paradise.
Born in 1943 in Mauritius, Denis Piat began his career in the airline sector in 1963. He went on to create two companies in the travel and tourism industry on behalf of Mauritian financial groups.
In 1978, he was appointed Area Manager of Kenya Airways for France and Benelux and managed its Paris offices until 1998. From 1970, he developed an interest in the history of his island birthplace and began to collect rare and ancient books. He further enriched his collection after settling in Paris. He extended his research to lithographs, antique prints and maps of Isle de France, Bourbon (now Reunion), Madagascar, the Seychelles archipelago and Pondicherry (in India). Without these collections, this present volume could not materialise.
Denis Piat's current activities in Paris include board membership of the Association France-Maurice. He is also the co-founder and Vice-President of the Association des Amis de Mahe de La Bourdonnais.
