First Edition of the First Important Hollywood Novel. Presentation copy inscribed and signed by the author: ÒFor Harold Davis, With the cordial regards of, Harry Leon Wilson, Carmel, Calif, October 1922.Ó A very fine lovely copy in the rare pictorial dust jacket which is fine and fresh which shows a colorful painting showing the bookÕs hero Merton Gill and his girlfriend looking at a film poster outside a movie theater. Enclosed in a morocco and cloth slipcase. Harry Leon Wilson spent time in Hollywood to observe the film industry first hand. In 1922, the novel was adapted into a Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly that ran for 392 performances before going on the road. A successful silent film was made in 1924 was directed by James Cruze (who had directed a film version of Harry Leon WilsonÕs other classic, Ruggles of Red Gap, the year before). In 1947, a sound film version was made starring Red Skelton, Virginia OÕBrien, and Gloria Graham. The novel tells the story of Merton Gill, an aspiring movie actor. The truth is, Merton is a terrible actor and when the movie executives see how funny that Merton's over-acting is, they cast him in a comedy, but tell him that he's acting in a drama. Enclosed in a morocco and cloth slipcase. Noted Hollywood writer has remarked: Ò.What is surprising about Merton of the Movies is that it still entertains after more than 80 years. Its wit and satire have a freshness equal to that seen in Merton by the comedy director. The story of a young boy or girl trying to make good in Hollywood has been told and retold countless times since 1922, but never with such refreshing charm and understanding.Ó Listed in 100 Books on Hollywood & the Movies. Descrizione libro Garden City & Toronto: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1922., 1922. Cloth. Faint old discoloration on top and fore-edge at the upper fore- corner, otherwise a very good copy in the scarce pictorial dust jacket, the latter with a couple of old inner mends, some overall dust-darkening, some short tears and chipping at the crown of the spine panel (just touching the top line of letterpress), and some surface abrasions to the text on the lower panel. First edition of this fictional send-up of the film industry at the time, itself the basis for several film adaptations. This copy bears the author's inscription on the front free endsheet: "To Sam Marx: It's funny in spots - but the picture business is funnier at least to yours truly Harry Leon Wilson." The candidates for recipient include either the producer (suggesting a date a few years later than publication for the inscription), or the father of the Marx Bros. Uncommon in dust jacket.
