Riassunto: This book consists of a set of assessments in the areas of habilitation, prevocational and vocational skills. The habilitation section is made up of an initial questionnaire designed to determine goals, needs and desires of the individual. This is followed by assessments in 14 general areas (such as personal grooming and hygiene; health; home maintenance; money management; etc.) which contain questions that target more specific skill areas (dressing, cooking, counting, telling time, etc.). The prevocational assessment targets basic skills helpful for an individual to participate in contract work within a vocational training center as well as in holding a job outside of a training center (color, shape and size identification; sorting skills; behavioral and physical skills, etc.). The vocational assessment focuses on more specific skills required to both seek and successfully hold a job in the community (following instructions; maintaining a steady production rate; completing tasks; following rules; filling out job applications, etc.). Each assessment includes an area for listing and prioritizing need areas and identifying training programs that will be developed based on this list. The book also includes 14 appendix forms designed to make the entire assessment process less intimidating.
From the Author: This book has been designed to make the daunting task of assessing individuals with mental retardation as simple and painless as possible. Having been on that end of it before, I fully realize how difficult this can be and I wanted an assessment tool that was as easy to use as possible. Assessments can be completed using any or all of the following methods as determined by the needs of the individual: personal knowledge of the assessor concerning the individual's skills; interviews with the individual; interviews with staff, family members and others who know the individual well; observations of the individual performing the skills being assessed. Following this format will, I hope, make the entire process of assessing an individual's skills, needs, and goals for personal improvement less of a chore and more of a "pathway to discovery."
