Riassunto: This peer-reviewed study represents a culmination of years of research into the history of the Theosophical Society. In this unique project which combines biographies with source analyses, Jeffrey D. Lavoie records a detailed history of the early Theosophical Society and examines its relationship with the modern Spiritualist movement between the years 1875-1891. Special attention has been paid to some of the neglected figures associated with these organizations including Arthur Lillie- the Gnostic-occultist and early critic of the Theosophical Society; the Davenport Brothers- the Spiritualist mediums who developed many of the standard elements which became associated with modern Spiritualism; Alfred Wallace- the prominent scientist, Spiritualist, and supposed member of the Theosophical Society and many others. This work will appeal to a wide array of readers including those interested in modern religious movements, Western Esotericism, South Asian history, and Victorian studies.

Review: "Lavoie pays close attention to Blavatsky's controversial role as the spiritual head of the Theosophical Society and presents the organization's early years, as well as Blavatsky's brief career as a spiritualist medium, in painstaking detail. Discussing formative connections and alliances among members of the Theosophical Society and various spiritualist organizations in operation during the late nineteenth century...a valuable contribution to scholarship about this particular historical moment and the arguments that shaped spiritual self-definition."-Victorian Studies, 57:1

The author has...made much effort excavating important historical data, not yet explored in any great detail and not yet collected into one coherent study, related to a better and more nuanced understanding of the many historical connections that clearly existed between Theosophy and spiritualism. It is predominantly in this respect the book contributes to the study of Theosophist history... - Theosophical History, 16 (2012)

[Lavoie]...mines extensively a quarter century of TH work...In retelling the history of the T.S. until the passing of Madame Blavatsky in 1891, he is able to show numerous links with Spiritualism...Apart from its extensive references to old and new material, the merit of Lavoie's book is that it causes us to look again at where the essentials might be in both Spiritualism and Theosophy. It is contrarian in the best sense.-PsyPioneer, 8:5 (2012)
