Pagination: 272p. Publishers blue cloth with title in black to front cover and spine black ruling to front cover. Minor bump to spine ends and bottom edge overall still excellent. No jacket. Clean and crisp copy. Rare. At time of description we locate no other copies of this edition. Chance to own a classic of early werewolf literature. Praised by H.P. Lovecraft in his Supernatural Horror in Literature. ?A classic of werewolf fiction, this was crime writer Gerald Biss (1876-1922) only supernatural novel. Having greatly admired Bram Stokers Dracula (1897), Biss uses a similar technique of presenting a casebook of ?evidence? to place an ancient evil convincingly within a thoroughly modern England. In doing so Biss turns the werewolf into a threatening symbol of a regressive past, returning to invade a progressive, modern civilization in which urban expansion is on the increase and whose symbol is the ubiquitous motor car. As with Stoker?s vampire Biss?s werewolf is also a figure of the invading foreigner. The theme is especially resonant in Biss?s novel which in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, presents its readers with a band of British and American allies who come together to fend off a German invasion of a different sort! Biss major source was the dubious (but entertaining) account of werewolf lore compiled by the paranormal investigator, author and perennial teller of tall tales, Elliott O?Donnell.? [- Gothic Texts, Mystery & Imagination - Daniel Correll]. ?His best known novel The Door of the Unreal, was his only supernatural yarm. Published in 1919 it appeared long before Hollywood established many of the conventions that nowadays are associated with werewolves. The novel was noted in H.P. Lovecraft in his ?Supernatural Horror in Literature? as handling ?quite dexterously the standard werewolf superstition? [- Bear Alley: Gerald Biss]. ?Some enthusiasts of the genre regard this work as one of the finest werewolf tales ever written? [-Tymn: Horror Literature 3-24]. Citations: Tymn: Horror Literature 3-24. Barron: Horror Lit 3-25. Bleiler: Supernatural Fiction 172. First edition second impression. First published October of 1919 this copy printed in December of 1919. The first US edition was not released until 1920.
