3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.

8vo. 1½ pages on bifolium. To an unidentified Madame, responding to a worried inquiry about a photograph in which the recipient believed to have recognized Dukas.

Oblong 8vo. 1 p. With autograph envelope. Beautiful musical quotation from Dukas's opera "Ariane et Barbe-Bleube", addressed to Mademoiselle Linette Chalupt. The quotation comprises 6 bars on a system of 3 staves (voice with lyrics and piano) of Ariane's aria "Mes pauvres, pauvres s urs ! Why do you want us to be delivered if you worship your darkness") from Act II of the opera that had premiered at the Opéra Comique on 10 May 1907. Dukas added performing directions "trés moderé et soutenu" and adapted a famous quote from Corneille's "Le Menteur" to flatter the recipient: "Votre façon de demander vaut mieux que ce qu'on donne" ("Your manner of asking is worth more than the gift"). - Linette Chalupt (1892-1918) was the younger sister of the poet and critic René Chalupt. Several pieces were dedicated to the young pianist, most importantly Erik Satie's valse "Son binocle" from his "Valses distinguées du précieux dégoûté" in 1914. - Traces of folds. Envelope very slightly browned.

Copia autografata
Folio. Notated in black ink on the first page of a bifolium. 315 x 238 mm. Small blind embossed stamp of Parisian paper merchant "Lard-Esnault" to upper left corner. 24 stave paper. Dukas has inscribed the manuscript at the top of the page "Bon souvenir à Eugène Ysaÿe!" The work is scored for piccolo, 2 flutes, oboe, clarinet, harp, and strings and laid out in 2 systems. Minor browning and wear. In very good condition overall. Dukas composed "L'apprenti sorcier" in 1897 and it was first performed on 18 May of that year in Paris by the Société Nationale. The work gained universal recognition after the music was incorporated into the animated film "Fantasia" produced by the Disney Studios in 1940. In the film the cartoon character Mickey Mouse portrays the apprentice. "The immediate success and world-wide renown of L'Aprnti sorcier", which first brought the name of Dukas before the general public, was well deserved; for this dazzling picture in sound of the tribulations that befell the disobedient sorcerer's apprentice in Goethe's ballad is a little masterpiece of 'representational' music, most imaginatively conceived and brilliantly carried out. The composer's mastery of the orchestra and command of every refinement of instrumental colour is already apparent . "Myers: Modern French Music From Fauré to Boulez p.58. "Despite his slender output, Dukas's place is at the heart of French musical life at the turn of the 20th century. Each of his compositions reveals a stylistic individuality and modern aesthetic tendencies combined with a deep respect for classical form. Dukas's unique position as a composer is evident in the character of his melodic material, in its symphonic elaboration and in his consummate skill in orchestration. It is their subject matter that places his stage works among the most adventurous compositions of their time." Manuela Schwartz and G.W. Hopkins in Grove Music Online "Ysaÿe's career was at its height from his first American tour in 1894 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. He played in the most famous concert halls and his talent was universally acknowledged. He used his fame as a virtuoso to launch new ventures: in 1895 he and Maurice Kufferath founded the Société Symphonique des Concerts Ysaÿe, managing and conducting a large orchestra which gave concerts mainly of modern music, and which became a feature of Belgian musical life." Michel Stockhem in Grove Music Online.
