1854, "A New Edition". (Three-quarter leather) Very good. 7 vols. Frontispieces showing some age / staining, facsimile page, the latter showing some tenderness to folds. Green leather darkened at spine. Marbled boards somewhat rubbed. Marbled edges, endpapers. Internally quite alright.
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. Hardbacks 8vos. 5 volumes xlviii 390 (4), 432 (4), 468 (4), 432 (4), 556 pages. 38 page list of subscriber include' Miss J. Austen, Steventon' said to be the first appearance of her (Jane Austen) name in print. She appears along with the Right Hon. Edmund Burke, Sir Walter Farquhar and a virtual who's who of lords, ladies, counts and earls. Jane Austen referred to both CAMILLA and CECILIA in her novel NORTHANGER ABBEY - "'And what are you reading, Miss ?' 'Oh! It is only a novel!' replies the young lady, while she lays down her book with affected indifference, or momentary shame. "It is only Cecilia, or Camilla, or Belinda; or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best chosen language." Sound set in full brown mottled calf with clean text (occasional very slight foxing) Bookplate of Suffolk writer Norman Scarfe and of the Carton library whose gilt emblem (crown and tiger) appears on 4 of the volumes. The books have signs of coservation and repair athe spine gilt title labels preserved on leather spines and volume numbers at spine but have been soundly and decently repaired at spines, the second volume is plain lacking the labels else about very good with clean text.

First edition. Five volumes. 12mo. Later blue quarter morocco over marbled boards, spines with raised bands, twin gilt lettered labels and the date gilt lettered direct to the feet, a prior owner's book small discreet book label to the rear pastedowns. Pp. xxv-xlviii - predominantly the list of subscribers - misbound into the main part of text, else a very good set. The list of subscribers includes "Miss J. Austen, Steventon". This was certainly the first and quite possibly the only time the author's name appeared in print in her lifetime given that every edition of Austen's novels published before her death were issued anonymously.

Prima edizione
First Editions. 12mo. In five volumes. (1)pp. advertisement after title page. The author's second book. Evelina, her first book was written anonymously but became surprisingly popular. Burney laid the ground work for female novelists to come. She improved the respectability of the female writer. The contents of her books were considered proper even for the eyes of young ladies, and she displayed modesty in her personal life. Burney's works have more in common with Samuel Richardson's Pamela than Eliza Haywood's Love in Excess, but Burney's novels depict more realistic female heroines. Anne Radcliffe, Maria Edgeworth, and Jane Austen were all subscribers to the serialization of Burney's Camilla, and all owe Burney a debt for advancing the popularity of the courtship novel and the possibility of women being considered as novelists of worth. In total, she wrote four novels, eight plays, one biography and twenty volumes of journals and letters. In one of her journals, she described in detail the horrendous mastectomy she underwent during a time of no anesthesia, miraculously she survived the ordeal. The surgery was done in 1811 and she eventually died in 1840. An exceptionally nice set, earlier rebacking to style retaining the original marbled endpapers, raised bands with black and maroon spine labels gilt, neat contemporary owner's name, only an occasional spot of foxing. A beautiful set. Scarce.

Full-Leather. Condizione: Good. Second Edition. All fifty volumes of this set of British novels. This is a new edition dating from 1820. This set was originally published in 1810. All are in at least good condition with rubbing to the spine and around the edges and some light discolouration to the front and rear panels. Each volume has two title panels on the spine - at the top this has 'British Novels' and the volume number and at the bottom the title of the individual novel. Most of these panels have unfortunately been lost with the top panel only on eleven volumes and the bottom panel on only thirteen with some of these only remaining in part. There is a little browning to the tops of the marbled page edges. Each volume has the original owner's bookplate - this was Alfred Octavius Hartley, M.A. of Steeple Ashton Vicarage in Wells in Norfolk. There is brown spotting on the title pages of each volume with some spotting on the following pages and the equivalent pages at the back of the book. There is some spotting through each book but this is generally quite light and does not affect all the pages. Volumes 1-8 Clarissa by Samuel Richardson; Volumes 9-15 Sir Charles Grandison by Richardson; Volumes 16 and 17 Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe; Volume 18 Joseph Andrews by Henry Fielding; Volumes 19-21 Tom Jones by Fielding; Volume 22 The Old English Baron by Clara Reeve and The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole; Volume 23 History of Pompey the Little by Francis Coventry and The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith; Volumes 24 and 25 The Female Quixote by Charlotte Lennox; Volume 26 The History of Rasselas by Samuel Johnson and Almoran and Hamlet by Dr John Hawkesworth; Volume 27 The History of Lady Julia Mandeville by Frances Brooke and Nature and Art by Elizabeth Inchbald; Volume 28 A Simple Story by Inchbald; Volume 29 The Man of Feeling and Julia de Roubigne by Henry MacKenzie; Volumes 30 and 31 Humphrey Clinker by Tobias Smollett; Volumes 32 and 33 The Spiritual Quixote by Geoffry Wildgoose; Volumes 34 and 35 Zeluco by Dr John Moore; Volumes 36 and 37 The Old Manor House by Charlotte Smith; Volumes 38 and 39 Evelina by Frances (Fanny) Burney; Volumes 40-42 Cecilia by Burney; Volumes 43 and 44 The Romance of the Forest by Ann Radcliffe; Volumes 45-47 The Mysteries of Udolpho by Radcliffe; Volume 48 Man as He is Not or Hermsprong by Robert Bage and Volumes 49-50 Belinda by Maria Edgeworth.
