Three-Quarter Leather. Condizione: Very Good Plus. No Jacket. Three volume set, "Reprints of the Early and Very Rare Jest-Books Supposed To Have Been Used By Shakespeare". Volume I Contains: I. A Hundred Mery Talys; II Mery Tales and Quicke Answers. Volume II comprises: Mery Tales of Skelton; Jests of Scogin; Sackfull of Newes; Tarlton's Jests; Merrie Conceited Jests of George Peele; Jacke of Dover. The third volume contains: Merie Tales of the Mad Men of Gotham; XII Mery Jests of the Wydow Edyth; Pasquils Jests With Mother Bunches Merriments; The Pleasant Conceits of Old Hobson; Certayne Concepts and Feasts; Taylors Wit and Mirth; Conceits, Clinches, Flashes, an Whimsies. All three are edited with introduction and notes by W. Carew Hazlitt, of the Inner Temple, Barrister-At-Law. Published in London in 1864 by Willis and Sotheran. This is truly a beautiful matched set, bound in 3/4 tan leather with mottled paper covered boards, mottled endpapers, and mottled page edges. There is a small book label (A. J. Cox) inside front cover of each, otherwise no marks or writing. Sextodecimo, 4 3/4" X 6 1/2", about 3 3/4" thick for the set. Pagination changes for each section, but there are about 1000 pages more or less. Five raised bands on each spine with gilt decoration and titles. Mottled paper covered boards are in excellent condition with virtually no wear. The leather has a few scuffs and a bit of edgewear with a few darkened spots, but nothing major or glaring. Miniscule cracks are visible along the spine but no splits. A bit of preservative or wax would do the leather good, but I will leave that to the purchaser's discretion. Interior hinges are a bit weak, but solid. Volume III may have had the front hinge repaired at some point in the past as the endpaper is seperated all along the hinge. Top edge mottling is darkened on all three but still visible. All in all a very attractive and solid set of a very desirable title. I have pictures available of each showing faults, feel free to contact me if desired.

Attractive 19th century red half morocco over marbled boards, raised bands, spines densely gilt. â A touch of wear to edges, marbled boards just slightly rubbed, occasional spot or bit of soiling internally, but a fine set with only trivial wear. Vellum. Condizione: Very Good Set. Octavo, Minor shelf wear, a little foxing to vellum corners of some of the volumes, a few scuffs to spine labels; very good set. 15 volumes. Octavo (7¾x4¾") half gilt-ruled vellum & cloth, spines decorated in gilt, morocco lettering pieces, top edges gilt. Handsome set of these plays first published in the 18th century. Bookplates of Sir William G. Pearce. Robert Dodsley (13 February 1704 ¿ 23 September 1764) was an English bookseller, poet, playwright, and miscellaneous writer. Profits and fame from his early literary works enabled Dodsley to establish himself with the help of his friends. Alexander Pope lent him £100 as a bookseller at the sign of Tully's Head in Pall Mall, London, in 173 5 . He soon became one of the foremost publishers of the day. One of his first publications was Samuel Johnson's London, for which he paid ten guineas in 1738. He published many of Johnson's works, and he suggested and helped to finance Johnson's Dictionary. Pope also made over to Dodsley his interest in his letters. In 1738 the publication of Paul Whitehead's Manners was voted scandalous by the House of Lords and led to Dodsley's imprisonment for a brief period. Dodsley published for Edward Young and Mark Akenside, and in 1751 brought out Thomas Gray's Elegy.Dodsley is best known as the editor of two collections: Select Collection of Old Plays (12 vols., 1744; 2nd edition with notes by Isaac Reed, 12 vols., 1780; 4th edition, by William Carew Hazlitt, 1874¿1876, 15 vols.); and A collection of Poems by Several Hands (1748, 3 vols.), which passed through many editions.
