xxviii, 443 pages. Hardcover: H 22.5cm x L 14.25cm. Original brown calf leather binding; spine chipped at head with surface crinkles lengthwise, spine's black title label retains bright gilt lettering, some abrasion and wear along joints, boards rubbed with mild wear at corners, gilt tooling to board edges but mostly rubbed away on bottom edges. Fading to marbled edges; marbled endpapers; dual-purpose bookseller-binder ticket "From | R. Wilson DeSilver, | Bookseller, Stationer and | Book-Binder, | No. 4, South Fourth Street, Philadelphia." at front pastedown's top left corner; foxing throughout; pencil inscription and old ink markings on ffep verso; past owner's antiquarian ink signature at title page's top right. Binding is firm. Else a very good- copy. Probable American signed binding as the DeSilver surname appears as co-publisher for the book and thus he was likely to have some involvement as binder. AMERICAN SIGNED BINDINGS THROUGH 1876 by Willman Spawn and Thomas E. Kinsella does cite a Robert De Silver (or Desilver) as a Philadelphia bookbinder, bookseller, and stationer at various city locations as early as 1801 through 1837. Thomas De Silver, likely a brother of Robert, was also a Philadelphia bookbinder, bookseller, stationer, and playing card manufacturer from 1803-1829 with his son Thomas Desilver, Jr. apparently assuming his father's shop in 1830.

Sydney : Woolcott and Clarke, [1853 or 1854]. Folio, disbound, original illustrated wrappers lithographed by John Degotardi (old paper reinforcement to original stitching and small closed tear at fore-edge), 6 pp of engraved music notation for voice and piano; page 2 has apublisher'sadvertisement at the head of the music; internally very clean, a good example. A rare and desirable piece of early Sydney sheet music. The only copy in Australian collections which appears on Trove of the Woolcott and Clarke edition, with its superb lithographed cover by Degotardi, is held in the State Library of New South Wales (contained in a publisher's presentation album dated 1854). Another example is also held in the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection, Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales. The more commonSydney edition is that ofJ. R. Clarke (1853), which hasa non-illustrated cover. A later edition with illustrated cover - also only held in the State Library of New South Wales - was published by J. Moore (1856-57).
