Assis representando Cristo carregando a cruz e aparecendo a Santa Catarina de Génova, conforme a pintura conservada na Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Loreto em Lisboa. Com pequena gravura com as armas de Portugal rodeadas por louros, na folha de rosto, cabeção constituído por vinhetas tipográficas e inicial decorada na primeira página. Exemplar com acentuados desgastes na lombada, que está quase solta, com perda de pele nas coifas e na parte superior e inferior da lombada e das charneiras, assim como com vestígios de exposição a humidade que causaram enrugamento no material de revestimento da superfície das pastas e enfraquecimento da sua ligação ao miolo. Pequeno pico de traça no pé das páginas 87 a 109. As páginas preliminares contêm uma extensa dedicatória ao 5.º Duque do Cadaval, um prólogo do autor e o índice dos capítulos. Nos capítulos 15 e 16 o autor apresenta resumos comentados das duas obras mais célebres da Santa, o Tratado do Purgatório e o Diálogo entre a alma e o corpo. Da página 214 ao fim o autor transcreve Bulas do Papa Pio VI, com datas entre 1781 e 1786, concedendo indulgências à Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Loreto, em Lisboa, com o texto latino e a tradução em português, cada um na sua coluna. 1.ª Edição, e única, muito rara, desta obra que não é referida por Inocêncio. Muito importante para a história do culto de Santa Catarina de Génova, para a história da Igreja do Loreto, pertencente à comunidade italiana em Lisboa e para o estudo da mística e das questões teológicas relativas ao Purgatório. Biografia, com 21 capítulos, de uma santa italiana, que uniu de forma excepcional e pouco habitual uma vida de oração preenchida por elevadas experiências místicas, que deram origem a obras de grande valor, com um trabalho de serviço aos pobres e aos doentes, no Hospital de Pammatone, em Génova. O original em italiano foi publicado pela primeira vez em Roma, no ano de 1737. Santa Catarina de Génova (1447 - 15 de Setembro de 1510). Foi beatificada pelo papa Clemente X, em 6 de Abril de 1675, canonizada pelo Papa Clemente XII, em 16 de Junho de 1737, e declarada padroeira dos hospitais em Itália pelo Papa Pio XII, em 1950. Alessandro Maineri (1675 - 1742) da Companhia de Jesus, escreveu biografias de santos e um trabalho relativo à conversão dos protestantes. É autor de uma biografia de São Luís de Gonzaga, (1742); e do Manifesto agli amici delle religioni pretese riformate, (1716). In quarto. 19.7x13.9 cm. [xii], 227, [i in bl.] pp. 19th century binding, with leather spine and gilt tools. Illustrated hors-texte with beautiful engraving, drawn by G Ratti and etched on metal plate by G. Assis representing Christ carrying the cross and appearing to Saint Catherine of Genoa, according to the painting preserved in the Church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto in Lisbon. With small engraving with the arms of Portugal surrounded by laurel wreath, on the title page, headpiece consisting of typographical vignettes and decorated initial on the first page. Copy with signs of wear on the spine, which is almost loose, with loss of leather at the caps and at the top and bottom of the spine and hinges, as well as traces of exposure to moisture that have caused wrinkling in the surface covering material of the boards and weakening of their binding to the core. Small moth hole at foot of pages 87 to 109. The preliminary pages contain an extensive dedication to the 5th Duke of Cadaval, a prologue by the author, and the chapter index. In chapters 15 and 16 the author presents commented summaries of the Saint"s two most celebrated works, the Tratado do Purgatório (Treatise on Purgatory) and the Diálogo entre a alma e o corpo (Dialogue between the soul and the body). From page 214 to the end the author transcribes Bulls of Pope Pius VI, with dates between 1781 and 1786, granting indulgences to the Church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto in Lisbon, with the Latin text and the Portuguese translation each in its own column. Very rare and unique 1st edition of this work which is not mentioned by Inocencio. Very important for the history of the cult of Saint Catherine of Genoa, for the history of the Church of Loreto, belonging to the Italian community in Lisbon, and for the study of mysticism and theological issues concerning Purgatory. Biography, with 21 chapters, of an Italian saint, who united, in an exceptional and unusual way, a life of prayer filled with high mystical experiences which gave rise to works of great value, with a work of service to the poor and the sick, in the Pammatone Hospital in Genoa. The original in Italian was first published in Rome in the year 1737. St. Catherine of Genoa (1447 - September 15, 1510). She was beatified by Pope Clement X on April 6, 1675, canonized by Pope Clement XII on June 16, 1737, and declared patron saint of hospitals in Italy by Pope Pius XII in 1950.
