Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 2nd Edition. An early record of a Jesuit mission to South-East Asia, including Vietnam (Tonquin and Cocincina), Cambodia, Thailand (Siam), Guangdong (Canton) and Japan. Filippo de Marini (1608-1692) left Rome and embarked in Lisbon in 1640 for his long-term evangelistic mission. By that point, starting from 1639 to be more precise, Japanese ports were already closed for the Portuguese ships. The book was first published in Rome in 1663 in five volumes and had a great success for its great attention to the philosophical ideas of the non-Christian religions. The second Venetian edition was revised with focus on Japan and Vietnam, especially its Northern part Tonquin. Later in 1666 he made a short treatise on baptism in the Tumkinese language. The illustrator of the book Antonio Bosio (ca1575 1629) was a Maltese scholar and author of legendary Roma Sotterranea . In Italian. 2 volumes in 1 book. Complete. In duodecimo. XXIV+640pp. Frontispiece etching, head- and tailpieces, initials. Pages uncut. Few tears and losses on the corners. Water stains and wavings. Vellum binding. Very good condition.

Prima edizione
4to. Pp. (x), 184, 181-284, 289-328; (ii), 329-436. Pagination irregular but text is complete. Some minor staining. Contemporary calf with gilt bevelled edges, expertly rebacked to style with spine richly decorated in compartments and with title label, sprinkled red edges. First French edition of the sections about Tonkin and Laos in Marini's "Delle missioni dé padri della Compagnia di Giesu nella provincia del Giappone, e particolarmente di quella di Tumkino" (1663).The second part has a separate title "Relation nouvelle et curieuse des royaumes de Tunquin et de Lao" and is only devoted to Laos. Marini was an Italian Jesuit who served for more than forty years as missionary in Asia (Tonkin, Macao and Japan) in the 17th century. He died at Macao in 1682. This work comprises valuable and accurate information about the countries and their inhabitants not previously published. Backer & Sommervogel V, 583. Cordier BI 1046. Cordier BJ 377. See Löwendahl 1493 who writes "that the book was apparently originally thought to end with the printing of the first part since it ends with "Fin" on page 327. When the second part was added most likely the second title leaf was meant to be cancelled".
