Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 103-111. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Pencil annotation on the cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: When Aristotle joined the Academy, he was about seventeen. He was Plato s pupil for twenty years that is, Plato had opportunity to observe him when he was a youth, and when he became a man. And yet, it was Speusippus, not Aristotle, who succeeded Plato. The question why has always been challenging. Did Plato (or whoever was responsible for it) underrate Aristotle? Was Speusippus favored as his uncle s nephew? Or were there any quite external, perhaps legal, considerations which brought about the decision? We do not know, and unless new evidence is discovered, all answers will remain highly conjectural. Less challenging but still interesting enough is another question hardly ever asked, though very similar to the one discussed above: Why was Speusippus succeeded by Xenocrates, and not by Aristotle? - Wikipedia: Philip Merlan (* 21. Laminierter Karton. Condizione: Gut. 111 S. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Vergilbt, sonst guter Zustand / Yellowed, otherwise in good condition. - [.] Everybody knows that the translation of any of these key terms can be very misleading. As a result, a translator will always have some misgivings, no matter what equivalent he decided to use. Whenever possible, he will warn his readers and so try to prevent misunderstandings. No such misgivings, no such warning seem to be called for by the term [.], particularly in Epicurean texts. Pleasure {Lust, plaisir, piacere) seems to be an entirely adequate translation. But is it? In what follows it will be shown that this question should be answered in the negative at least when the term occurs in Epicurean and in Aristotelian texts. But as the term is undoubtedly central in the philosophy of Epicurus and very important in that of Aristotle, such an answer should at the same time shed some new light on certain problems of Interpretation connected with these two philosophers. Furthermore. In the form hedonism (and its equivalent in most modern languages) the word [.] occurs and any philosophic dictionary is therefore likely to explain hedonism as a doctrine which teaches that pleasure is the summum bonum. But should the translation of [.] by pleasure tum out to be inadequate, also the usual definition of hedonism will need some rectification. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

The second section deals with Plotinus' doctrine of the nous and establishes the relation of this doctrine to Aristotle's noetics in its psychological and theological aspects, particularly as this doctrine is interpreted by Alexander Aphrodisias. It shows that a problem of central importance in medieval Moslem, Jewish, and Christian philosophy, viz. that of the so called union of man with the active intelligence (nous poiétikos) has its roots in Alexander Aphrodisias. It also analyzes a particular type of mysticism and of mystical ecstasy in which this union takes place, an ecstasy in which man transcends his particularity and by so doing divinizes and immortalizes himself. It furthermore shows that Plotinus avoided certain fundamental difficulties af Aristotle's and his own noetics by using the concept of the unconscious, which he also utilized to answer the question why souls become incarnate. Finally, it shows that man's becoming one with the active intelligence (nous poietikos) explains, according to Plotinus, the possibility of full self~knowledge. The third section of the book deals with some problems of personal immortality and the destiny of man as a social rather than an individual being, as discussed in Averroes and Dante, and incidentally also with the problem of double truth, which it reinterprets. The fourth section analyzes some doctrines of Kant, Windelband, Husserl, Simmel, etc., to illustrate the way in which the transcending of one's particularity, sometimes with distinct mystical overtones, is treated in modern philosophy as a means of achieving truth and goodness. It also shows to what extent the concept of one collective soul or intelligence (nous) tends in modern philosophy to be replaced by the concept or term of metaconsciousness, which in turn borders on the concept of the unconscious. As the book contains frequent references to Moslem philosophers, the last section contains a partly annotated bibliography of translations of al~Kindi, al~Farabi, Avicenna, Avempace, and Averroes, into non~oriental languages.
