Hardcover. vii, 360, [1] p.; 21.5 cm. Francis Joseph Thompson, 1859-1907. [First printed in 1913] Includes 188 letters written from 1887-1907. -- From the introduction: `Though he was a fluent, if seldom chatty, letter-writer once he picked up his pen, Francis Thompson seems to have been nearly as reclusive in the matter of correspondence as he was in his personal friendships. Indications are that during the twenty years of his working career he wrote probably no more than about three hundred letters, and the bulk of these went to Wilfrid Meynell and his family. Of some twenty other acquaintances it was only with Coventry Patmore, Katie King, and perhams Mrs. Elizabeth Blackburn that he carried on anything like a regular exchange. Fortunately, in addition to many of those to the Meynells, most of the Patmore letters have survived. Those to Mrs. Blackburn, aside from a few fragments included herein, have not yet been found, while all of those to Katie King were destroyed. Thompson never really enjoyed letter-writing. He lacked the facility for throwing off letters from shallower levels of consciousness, and gradually he became more and more hesitant about committing himself to what he called "familiar and unguarded" correspondence. In his later years his caution extended occasionally to writing a letter and holding it till the next morning, when he would read it over and then burn it.' Fair tan buckram, lacks backstrip, front cover spotted.
