Hardcover. Condizione: Good. LOGGAN D (illustratore). 1723, 1 pl. In contemporary boxed calf, corners & edges bumped & worn. Spine, raised bands, gilt titles to calf label, edges bumped & worn, some loss. Internally, portrait frontis, [10], 398 pp, [1] index, 1 pl, 1 header, 2 footers, 13 initial letters, the eleventh edition, bookplate to fpd (Rev Charles Chester), ink name to fep (P Galliard? 1728), title & frontis within red lines, text block edges reddened. Full Leather. Condizione: Very Good. Folio. Pp. 4 p.l., 398, [10] index. Title ruled in red, copper-engraved frontis portrait by D. Leggan, woodcut printer's device, woodcut headpiece and initials. Contemporary calf, panelled in blind in the Cambridge style, plain spine with five raised bands, gilt label. Minor rubbing to extremities, corners a little bumped, headcap worn, front and rear joints cracking (but covers holding firmly), otherwise a very nice copy, in an attractive and still-serviceable binding. The Tenth Edition of Pearson's famous Exposition of the Creed, first published in 1659, incorporates the author's final revisions (1683) and includes an index (9th edition, 1710). A powerful champion of the Church of England against Romanism and Nonconformity, John Pearson, Bishop of Chester, was "perhaps the most erudite and profound divine of a learned and theological age. His classical Exposition of the Creed. reveals his firm grasp of fundamental principles, his delight in clear and accurate statement, and his judicious and sober temper, while the notes which illustrate the text reflect his remarkable knowledge, especially of the Christian Fathers." (Cross, p. 1055). The Tenth Edition, Revised and Corrected.

Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged. Among Englishmen of the seventeenth century, [Bishop] Pearson was probably the ablest scholar and systematic theologian The Exposition of the Creed , on which Pearson s reputation still mainly rests, has long been a standard book in English divinity. It has won the highest praise, not only from Anglican theologians, but from such men as Dr. Johnson, Dean Milman, and Hallam. The last-mentioned writer says: It expands beyond the literal purport of the Creed itself to most articles of orthodox belief and is a valuable summary of arguments and authorities on that side. The closeness of Pearson and his judicial selection of proofs distinguish him from many, especially the earlier, theologians The notes a rich mine of patristic and general learning are at least as remarkable as the text, and form a complete catena of the best authorities upon doctrinal points."
