Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Poor. Third printing. Blue clothbound with dustjacket. Book condition is marred by damage to lower front dustjacket and front cloth board. Dj retains an excellent illustration of a train but is bumped throughout and torn at lower front, missing the lower two inches. At lower edge of front blue board, cloth is torn/frayed. Damage extends lightly into pages where apparent light water damage has damaged some lower margins. Book is otherwise very clean, square at the edges, and tightly bound. Interior text and illustrations are excellent and wholly unaffected by damage to front exterior. Highly usable book; email images of book readily provided.

Near fine in very good dw. First edition."Throughout its tumultuous 83-year career the late Nickel Plate Road was never really regarded as an enduring institution.Constructed in a matter of 500 days, the Nickel Plate connected Chicago and Buffalo with a 513-mile road characterized by long tangents, mild grades, and impressive bridges. It was built at great cost through a well-developed region already tapped by many railroads.Lacking even a modest reservoir of captive business, the railroad grubbed out a living in an intensely competitive transportation arena purely on the strength of the service it rendered. Hence this became a proposition dedicated to the science of moving high-grade freight with dependability and dispatch."--From the author's Introduction.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine in Fine dust jacket. First edition. 29.3 x 22 cm. Quarto. 483 pages. Blue cloth in dust jacket. From the dust jacket: "IT will starve to death," said the Commodore's son, William H. Vanderbilt, of the New York, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway born in 1882 to break his monopoly on railroad traffic between Buffalo and the Middle West. As it developed the Nickel Plate Road - as the NYC&StL was soon dubbed - spent the balance of its independent life fighting for survivial in a territory in which larger, stronger trunk rivals were entrenched. The remarkable them of John A. Rehor's The Nickel Plate Story is that the road not only survived by prospered, once free of the Vanderbilt domination that overtook it soon after construction.".
