Libro Prima edizione
Soft Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Text in English. 429 pp. Minor scratching of the covers. Before the Second World War Finland was well-known as the country with the last important fleet of large sailing vessels, those of the Aaland Islander Gustaf Erikson. This was, indeed, a continuation of a long tradition. Just before the First World War, when at least 60 per cent of the total tonnage of all European maritime nations was in steam, sailing vessels still amounted to three quarters of the Finnish tonnage. This study examines why the transition from sail to steam was so slow in Finland. The development of merchant tonnage, its deployment in different freight trades and the profitability of shipping business are all analysed. Since a very large proportion of Finnish sailing tonnage operated in competitive international cross trades, the study is not only a study of a national fleet but also an analysis of how windjammers managed to survive in competition with steam during the "Twilight of Sail".
