Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Maps, Documents, Drawings, Art (illustratore). 1st. This impressive volume was produced to mark the centennial of the founding of the Wakefield Class Settlement which provided the pioneer immigants who established what was to become the Province of Otago, with Dunedin, ("The Edinborough of the South"), as its capital. A H McLintock, a distinguised Dunedin academic, was appointed as the project editor and he gathered a team of valued assistants to complete centennial history, achieved in three years. Apart from an introductory look at the area's pre-European history, the volume examines all aspects of settlement and development: the difficult early days, the exciting years of the gold rush, to Dunedin's growth as an economic and industrial leader in NZ. The history of the development of the Otago/Dunedin area is divided in 13 chapters, plus an epilogue which advances that story to years following WWI and takes a peep at the prospects for the future. Some of the chapter headings give a clue to wide spectrum covered --- The Genesis of the Otago Scheme, The Years of Endurance, The Years of Strife, The Golden Decade, The Fight for Independence and The Years of Fulfilment being examples. The Free Church of Scotland was largely responsible for organinsing the first Otago settlement scheme and two ships carrying the first 278 immigants arrived in early 1848. The bulk were Scottish Presbyterians who entrenched the Scottish spirit of Dunedin and Otago that still flourishes today. Such is the exciting and varied history of Otago and Dunedin that Dr McLintock, and his assistants, were able to present a thoroughly comprehensive, colourful, definitive and absorbing study to mark the centennial of the settlement. First edition of 1949, 829 pages including bibliography and index, generously illustrated with b/w photos, art reproductions, document copies, maps (including fold-out frontis) some double page, plus cartoons and caricatures etc spread through 22 collations.
