Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -How and why did 'the rural' emerge as a medico-political problem, and how was this issue addressed in different parts of Europe This book investigates how rural environments became associated with particularised concepts of sickness and health, and how such views changed over time. Responses, in the form of successful and failed attempts to make a 'new' countryside, are analysed at local, regional and national levels - to some extent also involving international dimensions - covering sanitary and social campaigns, legislation and regulation, as well as the establishment and functioning of health services. The volume demonstrates the ambiguous position of rural society in European culture and politics. 'The rural' represented the good, clean, and unspoilt; yet it was perceived as backwards, uncivilised, and on the margins of 'the modern'. This volume shows how medical science and medical practitioners contributed both to the ambiguity of 'the rural' and to the 'civilisation' of country-dwellers, and additionally demonstrates the strong political and cultural positions held by rural populations in some of the countries. 210 pp. Englisch.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 129 p. ; 24 cm. Diseases do not naturally respect boundaries. Although their origins may be local, their diffusion often becomes international, borne by trade, war and other modes of human or animal contact. Combatting disease or promoting health is thus an international and a local matter. In the twentieth century international health organizations, both public and private, have greatly influenced the formulation of state health policies throughout the world. The day-to-day practice of health care, however, is carried out at the local level. International and local approaches to health and health care thus interact dynamically, and the relationship is characterized by a variety of tensions. This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the 2010 Bergen workshop on the history of health and medicine, organized by the Department of Archeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion at the University of Bergen. The contributions discuss the activities of the League of Nations Health Organization and the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation; the role of public health experts in Spain; aspects of health care for the mentally ill in Britain, Germany and Norway; the medical "otherness" of women; and the international and local response to bacterial invasion and colonization.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 187 pages. " . a selection of the papers presented at the 2009 Bergen workshop on the history of health and medicine ."Since World War Two, hospitals have secured their position as the "crown jewel" of healthcare systems worldwide: the obvious place to be for sick people needing their former strength restored, their pain relieved and their lives prolonged. How did the hospital acquire this prominent position in health care and in society? This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the 2009 Bergen workshop on the history of health and medicine, organized by the Department of Archeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion at the University of Bergen, which explored some of the paths of this important development. The contributions discuss the existence of a Nordic or Scandinavian healthcare system paralleling the Nordic model of social welfare; the development and practices of hospitals, laboratories, institutions and voluntary associations in different parts of Scandinavia, the United Kingdom and Spain; and the contribution of medical professions and specific managerial techniques, such as strategic communication, to the development of medical institutions.
