Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a magnificent collection of 20 letters written between 1504-1520 by the great German humanist scholar and philologist Johann Reuchlin (1455-1522). The letters are addressed to a circle of prominent and learned contemporaries, including church authorities, influential humanists, and close personal friends. They offer a unique glimpse into Reuchlin's intellectual life and the turbulent religious and political landscape of the early 16th century, particularly concerning his sometimes dangerous involvement in the famous "Reuchlin Affair". The affair began in 1509 when Johannes Pfefferkorn, a converted Jew advocating for the burning of all Jewish religious literature, sought Reuchlin's endorsement. Reuchlin refused, arguing that Hebrew books should be preserved, studied, and used in scholarly pursuits. This stance brought him into conflict not only with Pfefferkorn but also with the University of Cologne's Faculty of Theology and the powerful Dominican Order, who accused him of heresy. Despite support from his humanists friends and intervention by Emperor Maximilian I, the affair dragged on for years and Reuchlin was eventually forced to appeal to the Pope in Rome. The letters presented here document the unfolding events of the Reuchlin Affair as they happened, capturing the author's struggles, hopes, and fears, as well as his ongoing dedication to scholarship, religious tolerance, and humanistic ideals. They make for an essential read for those interested in the history of humanism during the Reformation period, and in the battle for freedom of expression.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the life and times of Heinrich Bullinger, a prominent figure in the Swiss Reformation. Born in 1504, Bullinger's early life was marked by a deep fascination with religious matters. His education began at a young age, and he quickly rose through the ranks of academia, becoming a respected scholar and theologian. However, it was his encounter with the teachings of Martin Luther that would forever change the course of his life. Inspired by Luther's ideas, Bullinger embraced the principles of the Reformation, advocating for a return to the simplicity of the early church and a reliance on scripture alone as the basis for Christian faith. The author traces Bullinger's journey from his early years to his time as a leading reformer in Zurich, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the religious landscape of Switzerland. Through his writings and sermons, Bullinger sought to promote a more personal and inward-focused faith, emphasizing the importance of individual conscience and the transformative power of God's grace. The book sheds light on Bullinger's significant contributions to the development of Reformed theology, his influence on the shaping of Swiss Protestantism, and his enduring legacy as a key figure in the history of Christianity.
