Minor foxing (mostly on a few pages at beginning and end of book). Lacks folding map which should face page 1. Burton left for India with her husband Richard in December, 1875 and returned to Trieste in June 1876. Portions of this book are generally thought to have been written by her husband.

A handsome and clean set. (225*143 mm). (Penzer 308-11). Burton?s personal diary was the foundation of Isabel?s controversial biography. In reading it one may presume her correct in stating that while others would lay down what he ?wrote and said?, she in turn would be the only one who could write down what he ?thought and did?. The great bulk of the text within these 2 volumes are entries taken directly from RFB?s journals and not printed before Isabel selected the passages she wished to incorporate into her life of Burton. An important source of Burton?s thoughts, this scarce book also reveals the values and perceptions of Isabel herself.

(219*142 mm). Lady Isabel Burton was a distinguished nineteenth-century traveller, writer and critic. She and her husband Richard explored the Middle East, India, Africa and South America extensively during his diplomatic placements and for their own pleasure. Individually and collaboratively they produced several exquisitely detailed travelogues, recording custom, culture, politics and geography. This account of their travels, first published in 1879, details the Burtons' leisurely route to India through Europe before crossing the Mediterranean and continuing south through Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula. This skilful and humorous narrative brings the places and people to life through personal anecdotes, observations and colourful description. Burton's political and historical comments on the lands she travels through are reasoned, well-researched and afford valuable insight into public opinion and world affairs at this time.
