First edition. An excellent account of the formation and operations of General Roberts's expeditionary force. Captain Colquhoun, arrived only in time for the action on Peiwar Kotal, but compiled a detailed account of the preparation of the force and its advance from the diary of Major Collett, the assistant quartermaster-general. Colquhoun, a Royal Academician, illustrated the book himself with five lithographed landscape scenes. A series of appendices give detailed information on the composition and ordnance of the force, and there is a useful summary of the work done by Punjab Chief's Contingent keeping lines of communication open written by Major W.C. Anderson, later of the 3rd Punjab Cavalry regiment. Bruce 4497. Octavo. Original red pebble-grain cloth, title gilt to the spine, blind panels and central device to the boards. Lithographic frontispiece and 4 other similar plates from sketches by the author, 2 folding lithographic maps and a folding table, showing the strength of the Kurram field force. Binding skillfully furbished, spine and tips consolidated, new endpapers, lightly browned otherwise a very good copy.
