Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 101-124. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name underlined on cover, source handwritten on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: The Sophist is admittedly one of the most challenging dialogues that Plato ever wrote. It consists of an assemblage of seven definitions of the sophistic art, all of which with the exception of the last reveal different and mostly fragmentary aspects of the essence of sophistry. At the end of the dialogue, a unified logos defines the sophist in all his deceptive grandeur. Thematically, the dialogue forms part of a larger project: to delineate adequately and unequivocally the nature of the sophist so as to distinguish him from his counterparts, namely the philosopher and the statesman; examination of the latter is taken up in the Sophist's sequel, the Statesman, whereas no account of the former demonstrably exists. Methodologically, employment of the method of "collection and division" unites the Sophist with the Statesman and puts into practice a new modus philosophandi. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Plato's Symposium is an exceptionally multi-layered dialogue. At once a historical document, a philosophical drama that enacts abstract ideas in an often light-hearted way, and a literary masterpiece, it has exerted an influence that goes well beyond the confines of philosophy. The essays in this volume, by leading scholars, offer detailed analyses of all parts of the work, focusing on the central and much-debated theme of eros or 'human desire' - which can refer both to physical desire or desire for happiness. They reveal thematic continuities between the prologue and the various speeches as well as between the speeches themselves, and present a rich collection of contrasting yet complementary readings of Diotima's speech. The volume will be invaluable for classicists and philosophers alike, and for all who are interested in one of Plato's most fascinating and challenging dialogues. This book presents new readings of all parts of Plato's Symposium and offers fresh perspectives on topics including beauty, desire, and immortality. Students and scholars in philosophy and classics will benefit from this insightful and critical examination of a complex and influential dialogue of philosophical, historical, and literary interest. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Book is fine. Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; Zina Giannopoulou argues that Theaetetus -- Plato's most systematic examination of knowledge - is a philosophically sophisticated elaboration of Apology that successfully differentiates Socrates from the sophists. In Apology Socrates defends his philosophical activity partly by distinguishing it from sophistic practices, and in Theaetetus he enacts this distinction: the self-proclaimed ignorant and pious Socrates of Apology poses as the barren practitioner of midwifery, an art that enjoys divine support, and helps his pregnant interlocutor to birth his ideas. Whereas sophistic expertise fills others' souls with items of dubious epistemic quality, Socratic midwifery removes, tests, and discards falsities. ; 224 pages.
