First edition. Size: Large 4to. xxxvii, 181pp. + plates (some folding). Publisher's quarter vellum with green boards, gilt title on backstrip and embossed family crest of the Guarneri family. Hand-made paper. Illustrations, 44 photogravure plates, facsimiles, maps. Dedicated to the memory of William Henry Hill "This history embodies the knowledge and considered views of three brothers who lived and worked in a life/long intimacy". A superb copy. Grove writes "that no praise can be too high for the contribution of this unique firm to the history of the violin and its accessories". The Hill family of violin and bow makers and restorers was established in the second half of the eighteenth century but it was William Henry, Arthur Frederick and Alfred Ebsworth who developed the firm; "Their connoisseurship was unrivalled" and is reflected in this invaluable work.
