Bound in grey blue paper over boards with black (or dark dark blue) cloth backstrip; with gilt lettering on upper board and on spine; gilt top edge. Rear board is creased along the top; minor spotting of endpapers and a few spots of foxing on fore edge of pages. Endpapers are sound. Dust jaclket, while being essentially complete, has a long tear along front spine fold which ends up progressing horizontally across spine panel, there are other small chips, tears and creases along the edges and the spine panel is darkened. Subjects discussed include "The Horatian Model n English Verse", "The Poetry of George Meredith", "The Poetry of Thomas Hardy", "Coleridge", etc. 324 pages with index plus a selectiion from the catalogue of G, P. Putnam's Sons bound in at the rear.

A.T. Quiller-Couch's (after 1910, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch) introductory essay gives a synopsis of the play and relevant background material. When a Venetian merchant, Antonio, is unable to repay the Jewish money lender, Shylock, what he owes, a trial ensues in which a wealthy heiress, Portia, dresses as a lawyer to defend him. Light browning to endpapers and colour plate page stock, some wrinkling and a tiny tear at bottom edge of title page, light browning to edges of text block, light wear and light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light corner wear, two very tiny scuffs on spine, a few rub marks on top and bottom of text block, light rubbing on spine edges.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, suspects his father's death was no accident and sets out to prove that his uncle, now King Claudius, is the murderer. Very light browning to endpapers and colour plate page stock, light browning to edges of text block, light wear and light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light corner wear, light rubbing on spine edges, approx. 2 1/2" x 1/2" area of color loss on rear board, split in paper at inside rear hinge - very very firmly, two very small stains on front board, front board is very slightly concave.
