Magnificent and noted Victorian binding by Leighton and printed by Bradbury, Evans & Co., Printers Extraordinary to the Queen. Very uncommon in the U.S. Bevelled green boards; gilt edges on head and tail; fore edge with gilt overlaid alternately with red ink to index each month. Both covers blocked identically in gold and black with "dog-toothed" pattern in gold with black fillet with repeating stars in relief. Patterns of plant and hatch leaves blocked in gold. Gold medallions at the edges with figure heads blocked in relief showing an infant through old man alternating with shields with leaf and stem decoration. Central mandorla is an oval onlay of red sand-grain cloth outlined with multiple gold fillet borders and features Eve offering Adam the apple blocked in gold; stamped and gilt lettering with signs of the Zodiac also blocked in relief. Stamped designs and gilt lettering as well on the spine. Interior with each page of text with border fillets; illustrated with 48 plates. Text with each month of the year related to the life span of man with poems from Shakespeare, Burns, Milton, Crabbe, Coleridge, Herrick, Ben Jonson, Dryden, Tennyson and others. Wear to covers with corners bumped and exposed. Some tears and fraying to the spine at extremities; Lengthy ink inscription on front endpaper. Some light foxing to first few pages and occasionally throughout; pages thumbed with light age toning. Binding firm but interior hinges becoming weak.

Dalziel, Swain, Cooper a.o. all after John Leighton. All pages printed within a typographical border. Bound in full brown morocco, both covers with large gilt frame decoration with green coloured dragon pattern ; all edges gilt. Binding with some wear at extremeties, tissue-guards slightly spotted. Notwithstanding these defects still a good/fine copy. The epitome of Victorian book design illustrated and produced by the masters in their field. The text-quotes enhance the Victorian feeling as they are not free from patronizing and exhortions. Original and first edition in a good contemporary binding.
