12mo, pp. [viii], 309, [3] advertisements; one gathering starting from the binding, else a good copy in contemporary sheep, rather worn but very sound. First edition: this book contains 65 essays from the the great 18th century periodicals such as the Spectator and Gentleman's Magazine. Included are three (nos. 5, 6 and 45) from Johnson's Rambler and seven (nos. 1-4 and 63-65) from the Adventurer, the periodical by Hawkesworth to which Johnson contributed. There is also a number (49, on pp. 203-7) designated as 'From Tom Jones', among others, and there are also several adapted from Richardson's Clarissa and Sir Charles Grandison. The publisher, John Payne, was presumably able to use these essays because he was the publisher of both the folio and the duodecimo editions of the Rambler and the Adventurer. There were only three editions of this collection, which was first published the year that Johnson's Dictionary appeared: after this there were editions in 1759 and 1765, and all are very uncommon. Of this edition just seven copies are located by ESTC: at the BL, Birmingham and Bodleian in this country, and Cornell, Harvard, Huntington and Rice in the USA. It is not recorded by Courtney & Nichol Smith or Chapman & Hazen; nor does it seem to have been noticed by Fleeman.

Folio, the original 140 issues complete, two volumes bound in one, original calf gilt, some wear, joints breaking, minor foxing or spotting, quite nice. Lord Rothschild, in speaking of his own fine copy, notes that "in the majority of bound copies, the imprint has been wholly or partly cut away by the binder." That is true of this set as well, though a substantial number are preserved intact. Edited by John Hawkesworth, this influential journal began in November 1752, and the final issue appeared in March 1754. Hawkesworth wrote about half the issues, and Samuel Johnson was the next major contributor with at least twenty-nine issues to his credit. Three of those issues occur in two states; this set has those three in the second state. Members of the talented Warton family, as well as Hester Chapone, George Colman, Bonnell Thornton, and other literary figures are among the prominent contributors. Rothschild 1120; Chapman & Hazen, Johnson, page 126. The first edition. Because this is a heavy item, extra postage may be required, with the exact amount depending upon the destination of the parcel.

Full-Leather. Condizione: Very Good. Second Edition. 73 of the 75 volumes of this set. This is a new edition dating from 1790. This set was originally published in 1779. All are in good to very good condition with rubbing to the spine and around the edges and some light marking and edge wear to the front and rear panels. Each volume has gilt decorations and three title panels on the spine: At the top this is burgundy and has 'Johnson's Poets' on it and this is present and more or less complete on 54 volumes; in the centre it is black and has the names of the poets in the volume on it and this is present on 38 volumes; and at the bottom there should be a small black panel with the volume number - this has proved the most fragile and is now only present on 3 volumes. There is a little browning to the page edges. Each volume has the original owner's bookplate - this was Alfred Octavius Hartley, M.A. of Steeple Ashton Vicarage in Wells in Norfolk. There is a little browning to the endpapers. The pages are also slightly browned with marks and stains to a few volumes but they are generally free from any spotting. The set deals with the life and work of 66 poets. Volumes 1-6 contain the lives of the poets and the final two volumes contain a general index. The remaining volumes contain the works of the poets. Some volumes contain the works of more than one poet while for the major poets several volumes are devoted to their work. Because this is a set of 73 volumes there will be an additional postage charge so if this is a concern please make contact before ordering so the different options can be discussed.
