First Edition. b/w. frontis. photo. of the club president (T L Taylor); contents list; list of illustrations; preface; foreword; colour photo. of the Right Honourable Lord Hawke )president 1898-1938; The twenty-five years from 1924 to 1949 cover a period in which Yorkshire were always an important force in the cricket world. Fortunes varied from triumph to disappointment, popularity had its ups and downs, but the performances, the personalities, and the influence of the club remained at all times an important feature of the game. What Yorkshire did and what Yorkshiremen said always made cricket news, some of it ephemeral enough, much of it graven deeply on the tablets of history. In the twenty playing seasons the county championship was won eleven times, and the lowest position ever occupied was eighth in 1947. As the period began, a wave of success was just breaking into the 'white horses' that mark the beginning of a fall; the resurgence of the nineteen-thirties finally crashed upon the rocky beach of war, and in the backwash and the eddies dwelt the inspiration for the high tides of the future. Yorkshire were sometimes a magnificent team, sometimes less than great, but never, throughout the whole period, were they without a great player, one whose name was known as well in Sydney as in Sheffield. It was the time of Sutcliffe, Verity, Bowes and Hutton, when these were at the peak of power; it joined a generation gone through the link of Wilfred Rhodes, and made its contact with the future through the batsmanship of Leonard Hutton; to rear: colour photo. of centenary flag (1849-1949) Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 344 pages. minor marks to frontr cover (white spots).
