Brown Boards. Condizione: Very Good Plus. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. The first three volumes of a six volume set on the Birds of Africa. Foreward to Volume I by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. All volumes extensively illustrated with numerous colour plates and topogaphical maps. Gilt embossed lettering to the front board and spines. The year of publication extends from 1982 - 2000. The first three of these volumes were owned by the ornithologist Dr. Geoffrey Beven. A very neat name and address label is pasted down to the paste-downs or front endpaper of all three volumes. In addition, volume two has an autograph letter signed in ink from the editor C. Hilary Fry tipped on to the front paste-down. This letter pre-dates this publication and is dated 24th July 1969. In it he discusses the account of shrike impaling found in the latest 'British Birds' and in which he asks for an English translation of a German article used in the study. He signs the typed letter in ink. A follow up letter from C.H. Fry dated 11th August 1969 and entirely in ink is tipped on to the paste-down of volume one. In this one, he thanks Beven for sending him this translation. In addition to these two autograph letters signed is a signature in ink to the title page of volume one from the illustrator Peter Hayman - below his typed name. So an attractive three volumes with association to an editor and illustrator. We include a copy of Beven's own ink signature - taken from other material to add to this sense of provenance. Volume one is in very good plus condition with a light bump to the head of the spine. The wrapper is ever so slightly loose fitting, has some shelf wear. The wrapper is a little creased at the head of the spine with a couple of short tears - one to the head of the spine and one to the tail - now expertly repaired. There is some fading to the spine of the wrapper (as is nearly always the case with this set). Volume two is in very good condition in a very good wrapper. It also has a bump at the head of the spine and several small bumps to the head of the rear board with light associated creasing to the wrapper and one short tear (with associated creasing) to the wrapper, which has now been expertly repaired. The wrapper has not been price-clipped but there is fading to the spine of the wrapper. Volume three is in near fine condition in a very good wrapper. There is some fading to the spine of the wrapper and some shelf wear. The wrapper has not been price-clipped. The first three volumes of what has become one of the standard works on African birds - in very good condition - with some interesting provenance.
