Volume VII in the series 'South African Forces World War II'. 8vo; original blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xvi + 405, incl. index; several plates; large, folding map at rear. Dustwrapper very slightly edgeworn, with trace of sunning to spine panel; earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; a little scattered foxing. Very good condition. "South Africa at War not only graphically describes the deadly battles waged against U-boats in South African waters, but it is also unique in that it deals also with the enormous effort by thousands of men and women who were not in the forces at all but nevertheless shared the anxieties, the hardships and the triumphs inseparable from years of armed conflict ending in victory. Problems which could well arise again, and efforts at solving them are dealt with candidly and no effort has been made to cover up South Africa's shortage of manpower, her divided loyalties and the military difficulties arising from racial policies as they existed during the war years.".
