FIRST NIGHT TELEGRAM, DATED 10 AUGUST 1959, TO LEO McKERN FROM LAURENCE OLIVIER AND HIS WIFE VIVIEN LEIGH: 'Great good wishes for huge success, Vivien and Laurence Olivier.' '[McKern's] second, and last ever, directing job was the Australian prize-winning stage play The Shifting Heart by Richard Beynon, a story of Italian immigrants living in Collingwood, then a slum suburb of Melbourne, and their struggle for acceptance and survival in a racist community. . It's UK season was at the Nottingham Theatre Royal from 10 August 1959, then the Duke of York's in the West End -- a joint venture by Sir Laurence Olivier's company and the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust. Olivier had invited McKern to direct.' George Whaley, Leo 'Rumpole' McKern: The Accidental Actor [USNW Press, 2009] The show received mixed reviews, and McKern himself felt he'd done a bad job. On the up side, he kept the telegram sent to him by one of twentieth century theatre's most glamorous couples.

8vo, pp. 256. Original light brown boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Illustrated dustwrapper. Top edge a little dusty, but a near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper with a closed tear to top edge and general rubbing and adgewear. First edition, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO LEO McKERN: 'To Leo, with many thanks for such a wonderful 'Rumpole', John Mortimer, Henley on Thames, May 77'. Presented by the author after McKern's appearance as Rumpole in a BBC TV Play for Today, the success of which led to the long-running series Rumpole of the Bailey. Between 1978 and 1992, John Mortimer and Leo McKern collaborated on seven series of the television show Rumpole of the Bailey, adapted by Mortimer from his own books, and starring McKern in the title role. Although the show was a huge success, relations between its star and writer were often strained. McKern was frequently troubled by the growing realisation that he was going to be remembered for playing Rumpole on ITV rather than Iago at the RSC; Mortimer, while grateful to McKern for Rumpole's success, knew his star felt this way, and was understandably displeased. Despite the underlying tensions, relations between the two men were cordial. They began cordially too, as this volume shows. Mortimer was greatly impressed by McKern's performance in the Play for Today, and negotiations with the BBC for a series began immediately. When for reasons best known to themselves the BBC decided against commissioning the show, Thames TV was only too happy to step in. Rumpole of the Bailey ran on ITV for fourteen years. A wonderful association, marking the very beginning of a wonderful association.

Single sheet ALS on recto only. Personalised stationery, the printed address deleted and the new one added in Garner's hand. Faint creases from folding for posting, a little age-toning, one small and very faint stain to bottom left, not affecting text. Envelope not present. ALS FROM ALAN GARNER TO LEO McKERN, DATED 3 MAY 1978, FOLLOWING AN EVENTFUL VISIT TO THE THEATRE. Leo McKern was in the last week of the run of Michael Elliott's troubled production of Crime and Punishment at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, when Alan Garner, the novelist and creator of the Brisingamen trilogy, came to see the show, He made an untimely backstage appearance afterwards: 'Dear Leo McKern, I hope that my intrusion on your underpants last night was not remiss. At the best of times I have a disinclination to barge into dressing rooms after a show. However, I knew a little of the traumas surrounding Michael's production & so was moved to say to your face that I not only enjoyed the evening but admired its execution. You will know that you have a difficult part -- & I simply would add that you also have my respect for your craftsmanship & art. It was not the time to relax & eat, but I noted the intent! May I keep the idea casually in mind? It would be very pleasant to be convivial when we are both in a vein. Thank you again -- for all your performances. Yours ever, Alan Garner' Very well preserved, and written in Garner's beautiful script.

Very well preserved, lacking the original envelope. 1pp. TLS FROM LAURENCE OLIVIER TO LEO McKERN, WELCOMING HIM TO THE CAST OF KING LEAR. In 1959, Laurence Olivier hired Leo McKern to direct the Australian play The Shifting Heart at the Nottingham Playhouse, in a co-production between London's Duke of Yorks theatre and Olivier's own company. Twenty-three years later the pair were cast together in Michael Elliott's made-for-TV production of King Lear, leading a cast which also included John Hurt, Colin Blakely, Diana Rigg and Brian Cox. Olivier's welcome note, on his own headed stationery, reads: 'Dearest Leo [handwritten], I have been meaning to write this ever since I heard the happy news to tell you how very delighted I am that we are to be togerther again on LEAR. Thank you for making anticipation so pleasurable rather than so apprehensive. [signed] Your Larry O.' An affectionate letter, very well preserved.
