Hardcover. Condizione: VG+/VG+. Black cloth. xviii, 316 pp. 1 color, 103 bw repros. ".the collection of fifteen essays by eleven distingushed scholars provides stimulating assessment of Peale's life and achievements. Some essays were commissioned for the book, while others previously published have been updated. The essays summarize the artists life and work, from his beginnings as a student of Benjamin West in London, through the painting of his major works-examined in close detail-his museum, his mechanical inventions, and his artistic creation of a popular garden and experimental farm in Belfield." Any reading on Peale is bound to be stimulating, and this new book adds some fresh insights. He epitomized the multifaceted self-education common of the scientific men of the early republic, and the way they interweaved so many different disciplines into their daily activities and studies. 14 page index at rear.

Hardcover. Condizione: Poor. No Jacket. Hilda T Miller and Lilian A Govey (illustratore). 1st Edition. A rare and collectible children's book by W H Koebel, published in 1922, 125 pages, very nicely illustrated. In the Royal Road Library series. Nine full-page illustrations per the list thereof, of which five are in colour. Many other smaller illustrations decorating the text. Text itself divided into 12 chapters. Essentially poor condition though extremely readable as text pages and all illustrations are in good, sometimes very good, condition. Coloured picture on front cover, which is same as coloured frontispiece, also good. Covers in general in fair condition: some bumping at spine and at corners, a few marks esp on rear, some noticeable wear. End papers are illustrated but both front and rear free end papers are badly foxed. Gift dedication, dated 1929, on ffep. Some foxing on first few and last few pages, diminishing gradually towards centre of the book though the merest inclination thereto always there. Some tears affecting pages 71-74.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Lanterns by the Lake by Joan S. Grigsby & Misc Books on Far East Lanterns by the Lake, by Joan S. Grigsby, 1929, An interesting collection of poems by an itinerant British author who came to settle in Canada after a period travelling around Japan and Korea, during which time she composed verses inspired by her surroundings and in the native style - a handful of poems in this collection are 'adapted from' or 'suggested by' a Japanese model, but the majority are original. Grigsby also published under her maiden name of Rundall. The illustrations provide additional interest: again, showing a western artist using the techniques and scenery of Japan and Korea. Unlike her close friend Grigsby, Miller had been born in Japan to an American family and spent the early part of her life there before returning to the US to complete her education - following which she moved to Korea and then moved between there and Japan, only ending her association with the country of her birth following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The two would collaborate further on Grigsby's collection of versions of Ancient Korean poems, 'The Orchid Door', whilst Miller had published her own collection of poetry in a similar vein two years previously.; The Building in Japan; includes various books in a Japanese or Chinese script".

Bound in traditional Japanese style, red paper covers in a folding hardcover case with bone clasps. in excellent condition a spectacular book. Inventory #35590-1 Last poem: "It is never I who stop to seek new songs. Rather 't is they that come and leap at me. And tease at my thoughts, until I cradle them down Into soft words. Then they doze happly, And rest at last in peace, and nag no more At Memory, the tired nurse. She can stand and look At the strange little varied heads tucked side by side And murmur fondly, 'They do make quite a book!'".
