This book explores what has made the forest so special to so many people, particularly those who tried to protect the Pigeon River Country from oil and gas development. The Pigeon River Country presents personal accounts of early days in the forest, including the hilarious adventures in a 1908 logging camp on the Pigeon River told by the man who got up first and went to bed last. There is a chapter on Ernest Hemingway, who camped in the Pigeon River Country and said he loved it "better than anything in the world." There are incredible photographs, the dramatic story of a 1984 incident at a dam, chapters on flora and fauna, and people speaking from the heart about woods and rivers. It's a book to curl up with when you can't be outside.

Hardcover. Condizione: g. First English language edition. Folio. 430, [2]pp. Original photographic dust-jacket over red cloth. Free front endpaper inscribed and signed by Russell Mittermeier. Drawing on Conservation International's continuing work to identify, research, and document biologically diverse yet dangerously threatened regions. The previous Hotspots volume identified twenty-five endangered regions; "Hotspots Revisited" reveals an astonishing nine additional areas, from Melanesia to northern Mexico, that now meet the same criteria. This work presents the most up-to-date analyses of the ecology of these endangered areas-including new information on freshwater fish and other animal populations. But the heart of the volume is in the hundreds of vibrant color photographs of the animals and plants under threat. Dust-jacket partly creased and rubbed along edges. Dust-jacket in overall fair to good, binding and interior in very good condition.
