Glen Iris, Vic. : Baker Publishing Co., October 1966. Quarto newspaper (270 x 215 mm), pictorial wrappers printed in red and black, staple bound, 24 pp (including wrappers), photographic illustrations, cartoons; a very good copy. A sleazier and intellectually less ambitious counterpart to Oz magazine, Tom Thumb did however provide some biting and witty social and political satire to complement its soft-core pornographic pictorial content (the latter clearly being what sold copies). The publication was very much a product of its time: the age of sexual liberalism and the permissive society in Western capitalist culture. Two legendary identities in the Mebourne arts scene worked on Tom Thumb: the art director for the majority of the issues was Peter Russell-Clarke, and the editorial advisor was Adrian Rawlins; the cartoonist was Ron Tandberg. Although the magazine had distribution in Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart (and later in Brisbane), many of the short articles reference Melbourne landmarks, lifestyle and events, making Tom Thumb an important primary source for the study of the social history of Melbourne in this period. Issue Number 13 includes on the centre-pages an article satirising the stereotypical characteristics of the (white, hetereosexual) Australian male,Anatomy of an Australian."For the benefit of tourists and immigrants to Australia, Tom Thumb presents this scorching, clinical survey into a unique member of the human species".

Prima edizione
Large 8vo, pp [24], 552, [2, addenda], [40], 2 engraved portraits, bound in contemporary calf, spine gilt with raised bands and red labels, joints cracked but quite sound and stong, internally with title page a bit wrinkled and browned through a bookplate glued to verso [but see below], else in very good state, FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH; LARGE PAPER COPY, printed on heavy paper, THOMAS WENTWORTH, EARL OF STAFFORD'S COPY, with his large and elaborately worded engraved 1712 bookplate on the verso of the title. Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford [1672-1739] is unlikely to have read this book - by all accounts he was hardly even literate, but his 1712 bookplate proudly proclaims his recent knighthood and appointment as First Lord of the Admiralty. At the time of publication of this Barwick's biography he was no-doubt keeping his head down after an attempt to restore the Stuart family to the throne through the so-called 'Atterbury Conspiracy.' He had been appointed James Stuart's 'Lords Regent in England' and commander of the Jacobite forces. Despite this he was allowed to slink away from public view until his death in 1739. Barwick's life was first printed in Latin in 1721, John Barwick [1612-84], himself a Royalist divine very much in Strafford's camp and who served the cause during the Civil War, undertaking intellegence work on the King's behalf, earning him a royal chaplaincy after the Restoration. His brother Peter who superintended the biography was a physician who died in 1705, this his posthumous publication; in a footnote on page 20 he gives an account of the misfortunes of Sir Thomas's forbears in the Civil War, referring to the then Earl Of Strafford, owner of this copy, as 'a worthy son' hence, perhaps, his acquisition of a large paper copy.
