Both volumes have unopened pages, light shelf wear; else clean and sound. Text is in French. DNB: "In 1926 [Philby] settled in Jiddah [Saudi Arabia] founded a trading company, Sharqieh Ltd, and became a close friend and an unofficial adviser of Ibn Sa'ud. Business, exploration, writing, and Ibn Sa'ud's councils were henceforth the pattern of his life. Commerce, however, was only his bread and butter: his true interest was exploration. Over the next thirty years he made a series of remarkable journeys, of which the greatest was his crossing of the 'empty quarter' in 1932. On these journeys he travelled by camel and later by car. By day he collected place names, temperatures, compass bearings, barometric pressures, rocks, fossils, flora and fauna, and ancient inscriptions. At night he wrote them up in his diaries, squatting in the sand by lamplight and hiding his work from his suspicious Arab escort. These journeys and the many books, articles, and lectures in which he described them are a monument to his scholarship, industry, and endurance, and won him high honour with the Royal Geographical Society, the British Museum, Kew Gardens, and academic societies all over the world.".

8vo. 65-69 pp. [entire volume: xi, (1), 148 pp.]. Original blue printed wrappers. First edition. The description of the author's journey through the marshes of Amarah along the Tigris and its web of canals, extracted from what was an as yet unpublished work on the subject. - St John Philby (1885-1960), also known by his Arabian name "Sheikh Abdullah", was an Arabist, explorer, writer, and British colonial office intelligence officer. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he studied languages and was a friend and classmate of Jawaharlal Nehru, later prime Minister of India. Philby settled in Jeddah and became famous as an international writer and explorer. He personally mapped on camelback what is now the Saudi-Yemeni border on the Rub' al Khali; in 1932, while searching for the lost city of Ubar, he was the first Westerner to visit and describe the Wabar craters. At this time, Philby also became Ibn Saud's chief adviser in dealing with the British Empire and Western powers. He converted to Islam in 1930. The personal contacts between the United States and Saudi Arabia were largely channeled through the person of Philby. - Binding a touch delicate.

First appearance in print of a lecture by the famous Arabist on the reign of Ibn Saud, given to the Royal Central Asian Society on 23 March 1950. For Philby, the golden jubilee "will be the celebration of the acme of a great career, the career of one of the greatest men who has ever lived and worked in Arabia in all history" (p. 113). After describing the build up to Ibn Saud's entry into Riyadh in 1901, Philby praises his contribution to mapping the Arabian Peninsula, creating a lasting peace, normalizing strong democratic principles, developing modern amenities and communications, and exploiting the region's ample oil reserves. In typical fashion, Philby is not above taking a few swipes at those who had sidelined him in the British diplomatic establishment. "I have had the honour and privilege of being [Ibn Saud's friend] ever since the day I first met him in July 1917. I believed in him then, though apparently nobody else did. I can claim that as one of my greatest rights to be considered a prophet, if I may use that word. I was Ibn Sa'ud's prophet from the days when nobody else believed in him. Today, he has no more need of prophets, because everybody believes what I did as regards Ibn Sa'ud thirty-three years ago" (p. 112). Not in Macro. Large octavo, pp. 112-23 in the journal. Original red card wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black. Map of oil concessions in Arabia and adjacent countries. Small black pen mark at upper-right corner of front wrapper. Covers lightly toned and creased, head of front inner hinge neatly consolidated, text and map clean. A near-fine copy.
