near new . Facsimile of the very rare 1688 edition, 136pp. & 33 engraved plates in FORTICATION plus 70pp. & 20 engraved plates in MILITARY DISCIPLINE. This early treatise on the art of war at the end of the 17th century is so rare that there is even uncertainty over the authorship. The plates are quite delightful & covering as it does a period between the frequent publications on the Civil War & those of the 18th century it provides valuable information on early Marlburian warfare.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, xxiii, 555 pgs, 48 illustrations. Decorative green cloth with gilt decoration and titled cover and spine. Laid in are roster pages of Co. E 1st USSS and Co. F, 2nd USSS and recruits, from a separate source; Includes the named former owner, Henry Badger. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Original cloth rubbed, dulled and soiled. Corners worn, lower spine end worn. Gilt is present but dulled on spine and cover. Inked name of former owner, Henry Badger Co. E, 1st USSS. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: One of the famous Union Regiments, the Sharpshooters consisted of individual companies from the various states, organized by Hiram Burden, a noted marksman of the day. Armed with Sharps breechloaders, the two regiments distinguished themselves in combat while serving with the Army of the Potomac. Dressed in green cloth and leather leggings, they claimed participation in sixty-five actions and battles, especially distinguishing themselves at South Mountain, Chancellorsville and at Gettysburg. In the book Regimental Losses in the Civil War by Colonel Fox, he states this about the Sharpshooters, "They were of a high grade in physical qualifications and intelligence. They were continually in demand as skirmishers on account of their wonderful proficiency as such, and they undoubtedly killed more men then any other regiment in the army. In skirmishing they had no equal". Eicher #1092: "This lengthly unit history is seen partly through the eyes of a regimental member and partly through the eyes of others of the unit. Stevens served as 1st lieutenant in the innovative regiment which consisted of members from Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, and Wisconsin. The unusual nature of the sharpshooters' mission and the regiment's storied performance on several fields - notably Gettysburg, where they worked well into the Confederate lines along Seminary Ridge - makes for absorbing reading. but for the most part the narrative offers a relatively straightforward and detailed account of a most unusual fighting unit. The author's literate and thoughtful reflections on personalities and battles add greatly to this history's lasting value." Nice copy of a quite scarce publication. REFERENCE: Eicher #1092; Nevins I pg 162: "A superb regimental history of one of the Norths most famous commands; a professional journalist, Stevens captured drama, color, and excitement.".
