Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 248 pages; Description: 248 p. : ill. (some col.), ports. ; 34 cm. Subjects: Stubbs, George (1724-1806) --Exhibitions --Anatomy, Veterinary --Art --Animal painting and illustration --Zoological illustration. Note: Stubbs is one of the most original and searching of all animal painters, whether his subject is a brood-mare, a monkey, or a poodle in a punt. For too long undervalued as "Mr Stubbs the Horse Painter", he is now recognized as an equal of Gainsborough and Reynolds in the foremost rank of British art. His searching eye made him a perceptive portrayer of human beings too, and the class distinctions of 18th-century England are dissected with the same clarity as the anatomy of a horse. Above all, Stubbs is a master of design, able to translate faithful observations from nature into unforgettable images. This reprint of the 1984 exhibition catalogue reproduces in colour all the works shown, and enlarges many details which illuminate the artist's technique. 1 Kg.

Condizione: Good. Later color print on thick rag paper. 56.5 x 75cm. sheet size. The inscription beneath each title states that they were engraved after original paintings in the collection of the publisher, Thomas Bradford, and gives the date of issue ? they were each issued separately between 1769 and 1771. The author of the verses is unknown; that the hunters are portrayed as ordinary townsfolk and not privileged landowners makes both the paintings and the poem unusual for that era (Egerton). The first scene was painted by Stubbs and purchased by Bradford after being exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1767. Bradford then commissioned the next three paintings in order to have images to publish a set of four prints to be sold by subscription (Lennox-Boyd). The original paintings were all exhibited at the Society of Artists over the next few years; today they are in the collection of the Yale Center for British Art, a gift of Paul Mellon. The engravings are not identical to the paintings, possibly because some details were difficult to translate into engraving (Lennox-Boyd). Bradford died or retired around 1774, and the copperplates were sold. The images remained popular and firms such as Sayer & Bennett, Laurie & Whittle, Thomas Gosden, Boydell and Boydell's successors continued to reprint and sell the engravings well into the 19th century.George Stubbs (1724-1806) was one of the greatest sporting artists of Georgian England. He combined science and art by painting animals with anatomical precision. After a visit to Rome and a period of residence in Liverpool, he returned to England in 1760. He also drew horses based on dissections, and in 1766 published a monumental series of engravings, Anatomy of the Horse, which cemented his reputation as a master of the subject. His vast body of work includes paintings of the prize horses of England of the late 18th century, often with their proud owners or trainers. He also painted hunting scenes, and wild animals such as lions and tigers, including some with lions stalking horses. Stubbs served as president of the Society of Artists in 1773 and though he had his quarrels with the Royal Academy, he exhibited there periodically and was elected as an Associate in 1780. Many of his paintings are in the world's major museums, with a large number represented in the Yale Center for British Art (Paul Mellon Collection). Some of the greatest engravers and printers of the day were engaged to render Stubbs' animal pictures as prints, including William Woollett (1735-1785), and Stubbs' son, the printmaker George Townly Stubbs (1756-1815) (sometimes spelled ?Townley?).William Woollett was an engraver working in London, highly regarded for his landscape engravings and one of the first English engravers to become well known in Continental Europe. A pupil of John Tinney, he studied at St. Martin's Lane Academy. His earliest engravings were topographical plates published by Tinney from around 1755 to 1757. He worked for the prominent publisher John Boydell from 1760. He exhibited at the Society of Artists from 1760 to 1777, and became a member in 1766, also serving as secretary for several years. From 1775 to 1785, Woollett served as Historical Engraver to the King. Woollett was also friends with the eminent painter George Stubbs, translating many of his paintings into engravings, including The Spanish Pointer, probably the most popular Stubbs dog print at the time. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.on thick rag paper. . 52.3 x 69 cm. 2 inch tears in left and frighrt marins of 2.75 inches. Matt will cover.

Title Page, Contents, Errata Slip, Introduction, Chapters I-XI, Appendix. Publisher's quarter green cloth and olive boards with blue paper title-label on spine, set in a brown cloth clamshell case titled in gilt on spine Provenance: R. N. H. Moore Stevens bookplate on front pastedown. A first edition of Broadhurst's study of the conditions of horses and cattle in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, especially in regard to the changes in techniques for their domestication. With eighteen finely rendered lithographs of both racing and show horses after the preeminent English horse painter George Stubbs. Not a proponent of the modern breeding and rearing practices for domesticated animals, particularly those for horses, Broadhurst examines the changes to cattle, racehorses, saddle horses, and the calvary from the eighteenth century to mid-nineteenth century. His text is subdivided into separate investigations of each quadraped variety as they were differentiated by specific domestication practices designed to maximize each animal's potential benefit to humans. To illustrate his most significant section, "Racehorses," Broadhurst employs 17 lithograph plates by Maxim Gauci and Henry Bernard Chalon after George Stubbs, as well as Seymour, Marshall, and Coope. These beautiful horse prints provide visuals to discussion of animal husbandry practices and the changes in racehorses over the two centuries. Topics Broadhurst covers include "great tasks performed by racehorses," "artificial qualities, e.g. speed," and "our present racers." Huth p.127. Loder p.375. Mellon/Podeschi 150.

Mezzotint, tipped onto backing sheet by corners, The discovery of this hitherto unknown state clears up much confusion and speculation on when the print was first printed. It has traditionally been grouped with three other prints of stallions published in 1771 by William Wynne Ryland (Lennox Boyd Nos. 19, 20 & 21). The previously earliest known impression of 'An Arabian belonging to John Warde' was published by Sayer & Bennett in 1777. Lennox Boyd, postulated by comparison with the other Ryland prints, that there were likely to have been two earlier states. including one published in February 1771. It is now clear that there was an even earlier edition published by Ryland in 1770. Although the state offered here has a publisher's imprint, later states evidently had much further work done by the engraver, providing more detail to the sky, the trees in the background, the plants and tree in the foreground and to the horse itself. The painting on which this print was based was commissioned by John Warde [1721-1775] of Squerryes Court near Westerham, Kent, and is still with the family. The horse was imported from Alexandretta in Turkey in 1762. Stubbs produced an etching himself of this painting (Lennox Boyd 17).

Stipple with etching, colour-printed with hand-colouring. State iii/iii, with the title in closed letters, and engraved inscription: "George Stubbs pinxt.*** Geo. Townly Stubbs sculpt. Engraver to His R.H. the Prince of Wales. / London Republished June 4th. 1817, *** ANVIL. *** by Edwd. Orme, Bond Street" A magnificent portrait of the famous stallion Anvil, by the master equine painter George Stubbs. George Stubbs is considered to be one of the greatest English painters. His ingenious animal and sporting pictures remain unrivalled in their passionate depiction of emotion and their commitment to naturalistic observation. Stubbs was briefly apprenticed to the painter Hamlet Winstanley, a relationship that quickly ended, leaving the young artist to his own education. In contrast to contemporary academic theory, Stubbs' attached great importance to the belief that art should imitate nature, not the work of other artists. He spent years carefully studying human and equine anatomy so that he could truthfully represent natural form and movement. A result of this study was his famous Anatomy of the Horse, which details, with beautiful engraving, the various elements of a horse's anatomy, from skeletal form to muscular definition. By the 1760s, Stubbs had developed a considerable reputation as a sporting artist and had attracted a number of distinguished patrons. Continuing in search of innovation, Stubbs began experimenting with a myriad of different mediums, becoming accomplished in both enamels and printmaking. Through arduous application, he became a talented mezzotint engraver and worked with ease in both soft ground and etching techniques. Stubbs' masterful paintings inspired some of the greatest engravers of the day to reproduce his work for publication, including his own son George Townly Stubbs who reproduced with faithful accuracy the sublime emotion inherent in his father's exquisite works. Stubbs was elected Director of the Society of Artists and a Royal Academician, and today his prized paintings are housed in some of the finest museums in the world. Stubbs was often commissioned to paint accurate portraits of specific steeds for proud aristocratic patrons, who wished to highlight their horses' racing success. This practice is expertly exemplified with this magnificent print of the stallion Anvil, bred by Thomas Paton. The image shows Anvil in an enclosed paddock, and exhibits a keen attention to naturalistic detail. Anvil was first a stallion in the stud of the Prince of Wales and went on to win a great number of races at some of the best courses in England. This beautiful print demonstrates that, with subtle atmospheric effects and complex compositional structure, Stubbs succeeds in raising the genre of equine portraiture to a poetic level. Large oblong folio. (18 1/16 x 23 1/2 inches). On laid paper with text and plates mounted on guards throughout. 24 etched plates all by Stubbs. Expertly bound to style in 18th-century half Russia over 18th-century marbled paper-covered boards, spine gilt in seven compartments with raised bands, red Morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with elaborate overall repeat decoration built up from various small tools. (Some expert restoration). "A landmark in the history both of anatomy and art." (Ray). First edition, first or early issue on laid paper. One of a select group of books which can be said to have "revolutionized men's understanding of the natural world" (Lennox-Boyd). The etchings have a "fine exactness and austere beauty" that "give them a timeless beauty" (Ray). The desirability of this work is vastly increased if the plates are printed on the thick laid paper, used for the 1766 first issue and for most other copies published during Stubbs's lifetime: the printing of the plates shows a precision that is somehow lacking in the later impressions printed on wove paper. The present example is printed on laid paper throughout. Examples on laid paper are increasingly difficult to find - even the Duke of Gloucester's copy (which sold for over $34,000 at auction in London) was on wove paper. Stubbs produced the drawings over an 18 month period, working from a number of "models" and keeping each carcass in his studio for as long as six or seven weeks. In order to produce this work he taught himself how to etch, as he had been unable to find an engraver. "The work appeared in 1766, and remained the standard authority on the subject for nearly a century . . . In 1771 . . . Camper . . . whose work on the relationship of art to anatomy had won international recognition, wrote to Stubbs, comparing his work with that of the great Albinus, whose Tabulae Sceleti et Musculorum Corporis Humani had appeared in 1749. It is entirely appropriate to rank The Anatomy of the Horse with Thomas Pennant's British Zoology (1770) and Gilbert White's Natural History of Selbourne (1789), among the most important of the several works of this time which, by emphasizing the importance of precise systematic observation, revolutionized men's understanding of the natural world" (Lennox-Boyd). Prima edizione
(19 1/2 x 23 1/4 inches). (2) 47pp. Rare errata leaf pasted onto endpaper. 24 etched plates all by Stubbs. Half calf over gray boards to style, gilt morocco label to upper cover, raised bands, gilt title on label. First edition, on laid paper throughout. A landmark work of equine anatomy. One of a select group of books which can be said to have 'revolutionised men's understanding of the natural world' (Lennox-Boyd). The etchings have a 'fine exactness and austere beauty' that 'give them a timeless beauty' (Ray). The desirability of this work is vastly increased if the plates are on thick laid paper, used for the 1766 first edition. First edition early printings from the plates shows a precision that later impressions, printed on wove paper, cannot match. Examples on laid paper are increasingly difficult to find - even the Duke of Gloucester's copy (sold for over $34,000 at auction in 2006) was printed on wove paper. Stubbs created these remarkable illustrations over a period of 18 months, during which he painstakingly dissected a number of horses, keeping carcasses in his studio for six or seven weeks. Stubbs taught himself how to make the engravings, and produced them over the next six years. The plates document all layers of equine anatomy, revealing the muscles, ligaments, nerves, veins, skeleton, etc. Stubbs' bibliographer Christopher Lennox-Boyd ranked Anatomy of the Horse as 'among the most important of the several works of its time which, by emphasizing the importance of precise systematic observation, revolutionised men's understanding of the natural world.' Originally published in 1766, the work's enduring popularity saw it being issued well into the 19th century.
