Prima edizione
First edition, first impression, of Synge's important collection, in four parts, of his account of the people and geography of the Aran Islands. "The Aran Islands. is the great prose manifesto of the Irish literary revival, celebrating a primitive but also transitional way of life, responding to a dying language, building friendship among ordinary people" (ODNB). Synge's visit to the Aran Islands in 1898 provided the author with the ingredients of his three plays: the narrative of the father-killer protected by local people (The Playboy of the Western World), the fables and legends of a miraculous well (The Well of the Saints), and the desolation of grief as storms claim the lives of the men of the coast (Riders to the Sea). The inscription appears to be from Hugh Priestley Smith (1888-1969), the composer of Two Celtic Songs (1912) and of numerous settings of work by A. E. Housman and "Fiona Macleod", to Gilbert A. Ramsay (1881-1915), a director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery and later superintendent of the Glasgow Art Galleries. Nelson 1907.4. Large octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, untrimmed, 2 pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. 12 illustrations by Jack B. Yeats. Presentation inscription on front free endpaper. Extremities rubbed and a worn, head and foot of spine slightly bumped, minor short tears to front hinge and joint, browning and foxing to free endpapers: a very good copy.

Prima edizione Copia autografata
Signed limited edition, number 18 of 100 large paper copies signed by Synge and Yeats, and with plates hand-coloured by the artist. This book, based on the author's annual visits to the islands prompted by W. B. Yeats, would become the "the great prose manifesto of the Irish literary revival" (ODNB). From the Penzance Library, the only independent library of Cornwall, established in 1818 in Penzance's Morrab Gardens, and now the Morrab Library, with the debossed stamps (with occasional neat perforation) of the Penzance Library to title, page 100 and the last page (not affecting any illustrated plates). Large octavo. Original beige buckram, titles and ruling in gilt to spine and front board, untrimmed. 12 hand-coloured illustrations by Jack B. Yeats. A couple of small stains to spine and front board, a little rubbed, the binding otherwise bright and firm, faint toning and foxing to endpapers, discreet numerical annotations to rear pastedown, internally clean; a fresh copy.
