Condizione: Good. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A good condition copy with no dust jacket or hardcover boards. Previous owner has created a front cover and spine label with foxing to the cover. Other than the missing boards the book is in good condition. There is tanning/foxing to the textblock and endpapers, but the binding remains in very good condition. Main body of text shows signs of foxing but this does not detract from the reading experience. If you can overlook the missing boards this really is a good condition book for its age.

Hardcover. xii, 347 p.; 19.5 cm. First printed as an article in the Encyclopaedia metropolitana [1823or4]; revised in book form 1828. -- `Because Whately's decisions on some of the major questions in rhetoric have proved sound and fruitful through many years of practice, the Elements, while not to be numbered among the great creative works on the subject, is certainly to be ranked among the most influential.' (Douglas Ehninger, in introduction to his edition of 1963, p. 30) Good black cloth, spine chipped. Lateral crease across pages.

Hardcover. 359 p.; 19 cm. 1826 preface: 'I have also to acknowledge assistance received from several friends, who have at various times suggested remarks and alterations. But I cannot avoid particularizing the Rev. J.Newman,Fellow of Oriel College, who actually composed a considerable portion of the work as it now stands, from manuscripts not designed for publication, and who is the original author of several pages.' - In 1852 Newman wrote: 'When I was elected fellow of Oriel thirty years ago, I was so shy and bashful no one could make me say a word or know what to make of me--so, I was committed to Dr Whately's care, then married and in lodgings,to bring me out. He most kindly undertook the task, and all the severe things he has saidof me since, cannot make me forget what I then owed to him. .He used to take me out walking and riding, and used to talk; and thus he was the first person who opened my mind, that is,who gave it ideas and principles to cogitate upon. He showed me some MS dialogues of his on Logic,to me quite a new subject, for I had despised it; I copied them out; and then he proposed to me, partly because, I suppose, he wished to be saved the trouble of going over the same ground twice,to turn them into the shape of a treatise for the Encyclopedia Metropolitana.I can claim nothing besides the few pages on the history of Logic. .However, when I came to look into the book I was pained to find he had added an Appendix.[on]theological subjects. In these I had always differed from him, even to his face. .His influence over me ceased altogether in 1828, being superseded by that of Mr Keble and Mr Froude.' (Letters and diaries 15.176; also 1.143, 306-08) Fair torn sheep, cracking on joints. Moderate foxing, unmarked.

(2 blank leaves after fr.endpaper)+t.p.+xiv (Whately Intro.)+half-title+errata sheet (10 x 14 cms)+126 (King's text to p.80, Whately's Appendix to end)+ 2 blanks before end-paper; text-block firm and unmarked until final leaf and end blanks which have an circa 11 cm. diagonal grey water-stain which extends in darker thin strip down most of outer edge, similar water stain down edge of verso fr. endpaper (recto being brown), and fainter strips to outer edges of subsequent leaves, inc., very slightly, the t.p., centre front endpaper has a darker brown rectangular patch, possibly a label removal ghost, subsequent blank has small number top outer corner of little significance but resists erasure; the covers are horizontally textured leather but all top and spine edges very faded to some depth, outer edges have thin strips similarly affected, extrems. moderately bumped, 1 cm. chip to top spine which is quite darkened athough label is clear) and has small chip to bottom below a very small hole. Slipped in is a photocopy of a 1978 Notes and Queries review by Simon Blackburn of 1976 limited 98 pp. edition (200 copies) titled 'Archbishop King's Sermon on Predestination' by Cadenus Press (Monkstown, Ireland) intro & ed. by D.Berman and A. Carpenter respectively. This very usefully sets the work in the context of contemporary philosophy and the scientific revolution, suggesting many of Berkeley's concerns were 'rooted in the controversies surrounding King's position'. Very scarce and only subsequent, also very scarce, 1976 ed. seems to have been issued since. Despite its faults this remains a very acceptable copy for academic and research purposes.
