Printed wrappers, small 4to, 20 cm, 26 pp. From the foreword: "I have tried in this pamphlet to do two things. First, I have tried to set out briefly and objectively the history of the project from its inception to the present time. Most of this story predates my involvement with the Library, and I write as a historian of the events, not as a participant. Secondly, I have tried to set out the reasons why the move to St Paneras is essential for the well-being of the Library, and how it will enable its staff to provide the level of service which its readers deserve and for which they have been kept waiting so long." Very Good.

Understanding Illuminated Manuscripts covers works made in the West from Antiquity until the early modern period and the establishment of printing, but reference is also made to later periods when relevant." Cloth, large 4to, viii, 144 pp, profusely illustrated in colour. From the blurb: "From Bishop Isidore's simplistic T-O design for a world map, through the elaborately decorated manuscript maps and printed maps of the 17th and 18th centuries which are works of art in themselves, to scientific maps showing the ocean floor, Peter Whitfield examines the history of world mapmaking through 70 outstanding individual examples, discussing each map and its maker in relation to their age and placing them within the context of the wider history of ideas. Drawing on the wide variety of maps held by The British Library and other major collections throughout the world, The Image of the World is superbly illustrated throughout in colour." Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper.

Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, x, 326 pp, ills, facs. From the blurb: "This handbook will provide a basic reference source for anyone who is concerned with the provenance of printed books and manuscripts. More specifically, its aim is to help researchers who are either (a) attempting to identify previous owners from inscriptions, bookplates, binding stamps or other marks in particular books; or (b) trying to trace the present whereabouts or prior existence of books once owned by a particular individual. It should also be of relevance to anyone interested in book ownership - those who are studying it as a branch of historical bibliography, those who are pursuing the history of reading, and those who wish to trace the circulation of particular texts by identifying the people who once owned them. The various categories of evidence are each dealt with in turn, supported by many representative illustrations and examples, together with listings of other books and sources of information which will help the provenance researcher in elucidating commonly encountered problems. While the historical emphasis is on British book owners, works relating to foreign provenance are included, and the comprehensive list of provenance indexes takes in North American libraries as well as British ones." Near Fine in a dustwrapper which is slightly faded at the top of the front panel and on the spine-panel.

2 vols, cloth, 4to, xii, 588 + 589-1136 pp. Over 9,000 entries. "This long-awaited catalogue contains details of some nine thousand Hebrew printed books acquired between 1893 and 1960 by the British Library's former Department of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books, now part of Oriental and India Office Collections. It is a supplement to both Joseph Zedner's 'Catalogue of the Hebrew books in the Library of the British Museum (London, 1867) and Samuel van Straalen's 'Catalogue of Hebrew books in the British Museum acquired during the years 1868-1892 (London, 1894)"- From the preface. "While the present catalogue contains a number of important and, in a few cases, unique additions to the holdings found in Zedner's and van Straalen's Catalogues, the majority of books acquired between 1893 and 1960 were printed in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. Many works reflect the depth of Jewish scholarship found in the communities and educational institutions of Central and Eastern Europe until their destruction during the Second World War. They include the publications of the Jewish seminaries at Berlin, Breslau, Budapest and Vienna, and important periodicals such as ham-Maggidh, published 1856-1903, and hat-Tekophah, published 1918-1950. Other titles, particularly among the liturgies and Bible, witness to the existence of centres of Hebrew printing in North Africa, the Near and Middle East and India. The more recently printed books, in particular, reflect the development of a modern biblical and rabbinic scholarship and a vibrant secular Hebrew literature which had its centre in the Jewish community of Palestine under the British Mandate and, after 1947, in the state of Israel." - from the introduction. Index of Titles in Hebrew Characters, Index of Non-Hebrew Titles. As new.
