SYNOPSIS: Foreword by The Very Rev. Alan Webster, DEAN OF ST PAUL'S. "It is with the greatest pleasure that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh announce the betrothal of their beloved son, the Prince of Wales, to the Lady Diana Spencer, daughter of the Earl Spencer and the Honourable Mrs Shand Kydd." These words from Buckingham Palace proclaimed to a fascinated world the most momentous piece of Royal news since the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II twenty-seven years previously. The announcement brought with it a happy conclusion to months of speculation, delight amongst the public at large, and the compelling prospect of a ceremony which carried the unspoken promise of being "the wedding of the century." Invitation to a Royal Wedding places the courtship and marriage of a Royal heir to the daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer in its historical perspective. It looks at the traditions and the meticulous planning inevitably associated with what may be seen as the most important wedding since that of Edward VII in 1863. Above all, with its details of the processional routes, of the accompanying celebrations and of the ceremony itself in the magnificent English Renaissance setting of St Paul's Cathedral, it invites you to be a witness to this occasion of supreme pageantry. Kathryn Spink was born in India and educated at St Helen's and St Katherine's School, Abingdon and St Anne's College, Oxford. As a linguist, she has travelled extensively throughout the world and has written a considerable number of books on travel. She is also the author of "John Paul II in the Service of Love," a book about the current Pope which was a best seller in America, and more recently of "For the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God," an account of the international mission of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, her Missionaries of Charity and her Co-Workers. Mass Market Paperback. Condizione: Good. David Chang (illustratore). First Thus 1st Printing. Repaired; Light Creasing on Front, Rear Covers, Spine; Front, Rear Covers, Spine Lightly Chipped; Spine Slightly Cocked; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. SYNOPSIS: Christmas in Adelaide promises to be a pleasant vacation for Andrew Basnett, retired professor of botany and amateur sleuth. But the shadow of an unsolved murder hangs over the lives of his hosts, Tony and Jan Gardiner. The police still suspect Jan of her first husband's murder and it doesn't help when a second killing takes place under the same bizarre circumstances. What can a guest do in such a case but try to clear his hostess and solve the crime? - and - Andrew Basnett, that endearing professor of botany who has discovered in retirement a talent for solving crime, decides to accept an invitation from a former student, Tony Gardiner, to spend Christmas with him and his newly wedded wife in Adelaide, where, so Andrew observes, he has heard more bizarre murders have happened than anywhere else in Australia. The remark provokes from Tony an uncharacteristically aggressive response. Andrew could not have known that Jan Gardiner's first husband was the victim of such a crime, that the case is still unsolved, and that Jan is still a suspect. But when in the midst of celebrating Christmas on the beach someone else closely connected with Jan is murdered by identical means, Andrew cannot avoid being drawn into the little circle of family and close friends, among whom the police are convinced the murderer will be found. And of course Andrew cannot avoid making his own observations and drawing certain conclusions which once again lead to the solving of the crimes. Not since The Small World of Murder has Elizabeth Ferrars set a crime novel in Australia. Readers worldwide will welcome Andrew Basnett's foray into another continent, where his sharp eye for human foibles finds as much to occupy it as it has done nearer home in Something Wicked and Root of All Evil. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

SYNOPSIS: For three decades, Robert Fulford has watched the flowering of the arts in Canada from an ideal vantage point, the best seat in the house. He grew up next door to Glenn Gould, befriended Michael Snow when Fulford and Snow were both teenagers, and eventually worked alongside Pierre Berton, Peter Gzowski, Christina McCall, Nathan Cohen and Peter C. Newman. Written in the style that won nine National Magazine Awards, Fulford's frank and absorbing memoirs cover a period of startling change in Canadian life and chart a unique adventure in self-transformation: from sports writer to literary critic, from high-school dropout to Distinguished Visitor at the University of Toronto, from all-purpose hack to editor (for nineteen years) of the most admired magazine in Canada, Saturday Night. Along the way Fulford managed a jazz band, argued in public and private with Marshall McLuhan, hosted both a radio and TV show, organized a concert that featured Maureen Forrester, and published the work of Margaret Atwood (who directed him in his first--and last--stage performance, playing himself as rewritten by Atwood). When he resigned from Saturday Night in 1987 because he declined to work for the new owner, Conrad Black, the news made headlines across Canada and drew hundreds of tributes. "I was able," Fulford writes, "to read my obituaries without the inconvenience of dying, a pleasure denied those whose careers are uniformly successful." That resignation, and the sometimes farcical events surrounding it, form the conclusion to this perceptive account of a life lived at the centre of Canadian culture. Robert Fulford is now a weekly columnist for The Financial Times of Canada and co-host of Realities on TVOntario. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and holds honorary degrees from McMaster and York Universities and the University of Western Ontario. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

SYNOPSIS: Now entering its seventeenth season, Man Alive remains the longest-running program of its type in the history of television. Host to more than a million viewing Canadians and many Americans each week, Roy Bonisteel has often been compared with that other superb interviewer, Edward R. Murrow. He is the deserving recipient of numerous awards for excellence in broadcasting and his approach is well summed up in the Hamilton Spectator's comment: "Man Alive is the only network show - Canadian or American - to table social and religious issues in an intelligent, non-preachy way." Man Alive: The Human Journey is Roy Bonisteel's second book and every viewer of the program will want to read it. By distilling the content of a number of his programs - both recent and older vintage - Bonisteel here presents his own assessment of contemporary issues ranging from the status of the elderly in our society to the current crisis in the Vatican; from the exploitation of the young to the ever-present threat of nuclear catastrophe. And in touching upon the various aspects of faith, which is central both to Man Alive itself and to this book, Roy Bonisteel also inevitably includes here four unforgettable portraits of men of faith: the Dalai Lama, Bishop James Pike and Canada's Paul-Emile, Cardinal Leger and Archbishop Edward "Ted" Scott. Other memorable portraits feature Dr. Helen Caldicott, the anti-nuclear activist, atomic scientist Dr. Edward Teller, Diane Dupuy and her wonderful Famous People Players, and Father Lucien Larre of Regina's Bosco Homes. It is thought-provoking and stimulating material, with each chapter illuminating some aspect of the human journey and all of it presented in Bonisteel's special lucid and persuasive way. Roy Bonisteel has been the host of CBC-TV's Man Alive series for seventeen years and a broadcaster since 1951, when he joined CJBQ Belleville, Ontario, after a stint in journalism. In 1953, he moved to station CKTB St. Catharines and was for twelve years a popular radio personality in the Niagara area. Then, in 1965, he went to Vancouver as Director of Broadcasting for the United Church of Canada and two years later became National Radio Coordinator for the Anglican, Roman Catholic and United Churches. In 1970, he resigned this position to devote all his efforts to the Man Alive television series. Among the awards and recognition Roy Bonisteel has received as a result of Man Alive are the ACTRA award for the best television host in Canada and honorary doctorates from universities that include Laurentian in Sudbury, Queen's in Kingston, Mount St. Vincent in Halifax and the University of Windsor. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
