Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. N4 - A hardcover book SIGNED by James A. Mundie, Dean E. Letzring, Bruce S. Allardice, John H. Luckey on the title page in very good condition in very good dust jacket that is mylar protected. Book has previous owner's inscription written on the half-title page, dust jacket and book have some bumped corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. Includes a laid in Updates, Revisions, and Correction (1/08/03) sheet. Foreword by Jerry D. Thompson. 9.25"x6.25", 414 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Texas Burial Sites of Civil War Notables is the compelling and comprehensive story of those Texans who played leading roles in America's Civil War. The product of years of research by a quartet of authors, Texas Burial Sites of Civil War Notables features more than 600 of the most "notable" Civil War era leaders who are buried in Texas. The men and women covered, both Unionists and Confederates, include politicians, generals, naval officers, authors and civilians. A biography is given for each individual, along with directions to where he or she is buried. It is lavishly illustrated with superb photos of the tombstones and gravesites. The book covers people in 290 cemeteries, in 131 counties, in every region of Texas. Among the "notables" is "The Raven," Sam Houston, Texas' George Washington. Sam Houston opposed secession and, as governor, did more than any other public official in the South to keep his state in the Union. Despite his opposition, Texas seceded, and the secessionists forced him out of office. Texas hero Dick Dowling, a Houston saloonkeeper of Irish birth, won fame for his defense of Sabine Pass. Lieutenant Dowling and his 43 men repulsed a major Union invasion of Texas, in a battle often referred to as the "Thermopylae of the Civil War." Confederate President Jefferson Davis honored Dowling and his men with the only official medal for valor awarded by the Confederacy during the war. The highest-ranking general killed during the war, Confederate general Albert Sidney Johnston; the highest ranking Hispanic Confederate, Laredo's Santos Benavides; Lee McNelly, perhaps the most famous Texas Ranger of all time; Union spy Sarah Emma Edmonds Seelye; Richard King, who founded the vast King Ranch; colorful gunfighter Dallas Stoudemire; Union general and Reconstruction Governor Edmund J. Davis; hundreds of others, famous and infamous, can be found in this valuable work. Texas Burial Sites of Civil War Notables is the first illustrated field guide ever published of the burial places of a state's Civil War leaders. Historian and author Jerry Don Thompson calls it "a compelling and creative work that is certain to deepen our understanding of Texas' place in the Confederacy and in the nation." With a scope and scholarship unique in Civil War historiography, it will engage and entertain the casual reader, the Civil War historian, the reenactor, and the genealogist alike. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.
