Cloth, folio, viii, 285 pp, 880 black-and-white and 42 colour ills. From the blurb: "The rapid growth and development of printing from the end of the eighteenth century resulted from the same factors that caused changes in British society at large - expansion of trade, improved communications, and pressure for the propagation of ideas. Both from the design and technical standpoints, however, the changes are reflected most in periodical and jobbing work and in ephemeral printing generally; and it is these areas, rather than traditional book production, that Michael Twyman discusses and illustrates as he traces the development of printing in England over the last two hundred years. What emerges especially from his study is the change in approach to design, for example in advertising and display, that led ultimately to the new profession of graphic design in the present century. It follows therefore that this book will be of special value to students of graphic design and typography; at the same time, because Michael Twyman writes with an easy fluency and seeks to avoid technical terms, it will be of considerable appeal to everyone interested in printing and social history. In the first, narrative section, he covers the printing of both words and pictures, gives a brief background of the industry, and describes the growth of the many techniques used and of technology and design. Then, in the illustration section, he concentrates on five themes -Ceremony, Rural life, Transport, Wars, Exhibitions - in order to convey the variety of printing produced in the last two hundred years and provide also a vivid record of aspects of the history of the period. Michael Twyman's book, through its concise, knowledgeable text and its wealth of illustration, is, like the John Johnson Collection which has contributed so importantly to the illustrations, a mine of information, much of it not hitherto available, on the history of printing and on the social and economic history of the last two hundred years." Name on front free endpaper, otherwise Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper with minor creasing at the top edge.

(NEW BOOK) Drawing on the collections of the British Library and the National Library of Wales (o.k, o.k., so they finally won another grand slam) this work is a source of information on books and journals on Rugby Union football from throughout the English-speaking word. 2 vols, cloth, 4to, 29 cm, xvi, 819 + 821-1686 pp. 25.722 entries. The two parts of Volume 2 of the Cathedral Libraries Catalogue: Part I A-K and Part II l-Z, Indexes. This is a full-scale catalogue of all the books printed outside Great Britain before 1701 (and false foreign imprints which were in fact printed in England). The nearly 26,000 entries each give a long short-title entry with author, title, imprint, notes and locations, with page and/or signature collations where available. From the publicity material: "The popular misconception that Cathedral Libraries contain only theology is forcibly refuted by this catalogue. Theology is of course present: in fact, the catalogue gives a full picture of the range of orthodox and dissident opinion in religion from the late Middles Ages, through the Reformation and Counter Reformation and on into the seventeenth-century controversies presaging the Enlightenment. The same full chronological panorama can be seen for many other fields too: law, history, geography, classical studies, oriental studies, literary and popular texts in all the major and many of the minor languages of Europe and beyond. The entries under Bible and Liturgies show the immense range of materials in these two areas collected by the dignitaries of our Cathedrals in the early modern period. The Printers Index shows the range of materials represented for the printing historian, from major figures such as Aldus Manutius, the Estienne family and Christophe Plantin to the minor jobbing printers of small provincial towns, and from major centres such as Venice, Antwerp and Amsterdam to the small university towns of North Germany and the Baltic whose theses are represented in hundreds in the Catalogue. " The Cathedrals catalogued are: Bangor; Bristol; Bury St Edmunds; Canterbury; Carlisle; Chelmsford; Chester; Chichester; Durham; Exeter; Gloucester; Hereford; Isle of Man (Peel); Lichfield; Lincoln; Liverpool; Llandaff; Newcastle; Norwich; Peterborough; Ripon; Rochester; St Albans; St Asaph; St David's; St Paul's, Salisbury; Southwark; Southwell; Truro; Wells; Winchester; Worcester; York. Fine set save for stringmark to lower edge of each board.
